Angry Warped rotors

I took the M to track for a day of driving (20-30 mins at a time) and promptly warped my rotors. I followed a stock 335i most of the time.

My dealer says no coverage (as part of the $0 maintenance) for me as the car was used in "racing." It was a driving event! Never had a problem with my P-car there. It's $2700+ to replace the rotors and pads.

Has anyone had any luck in BMW covering the repair?

Thanks!

You shouldn´t told your dealer that you used the car in the track.

Best of luck.

How did you warp them? Left the parking brake on?

I have warped my rotors while at the track with 325Ci in the past. It was due to the pads being too aggressive for the rotors (race type pads) and not performing a proper cool down lap. Also, it is recommended to inch the car back and forth slightly while it's parked cooling so that the hot pads don't face the same spot on the rotors for too long.

I am surprised this would happen with stock pads and rotors though.

geez. That doesn't sound good. Could they prove you tracked the car if you didn't tell them?

Yeah you probably shouldn't have told the dealer that you tracked the car. They wont replace it unless you pay for it. Strange that the rotors warped THAT quickly.

I knew a guy who said that he took his M3 and destroyed his rotors and told his dealer that he was going up and down a steep hill on the brakes the whole time, hit a big puddle of water and the rotors warped. Dealer replaced it 100%... Even thought thats hard to believe, he got away with it

Relax! Unless you have done something really stupid (like engaging the parking brake after a race lap), you don't have warped rotors. What you probably experience now is a rattle when braking at speeds >50mph, right? This comes from pad deposits on the disks. I had the same after a weekend on the Nurburgring.
This can be fixed at almost no cost: Go to your dealer let them sand/polish your discs. Then after a couple hundred miles of driving braking will be as smooth as before.

It depends on the dealer. I warped my front rotors at the Nurburgring and told the dealer about it, they changed the rotors/pads free of charge. Its also funny you said you spent most of the time following a 335 because part of my argument with the dealer was the brakes never warped on my 335i and I drove that thing harder and more laps than I did the M3. I'm looking for new pads or BBK. The brakes suck as they stand right now.

I can see possibly changing fluid, pads, and maybe lines. But other than that, the rotors seem fine as do the calipers. I think it's the cooling that causes fade on the M. The cooling system IMO is the weakest design. Changing to larger calipers with more pistons, different rotors, etc., I doubt will do much to improve things.

Most times, warped rotors are a result of bad braking habits - not the rotors themselves...

Do a search on google for "new brakes bed in process" for brakes and do it. You probably just have pad material on there, not warped. The sensation is the same when braking. It cant hurt to try a bed in and will only take 20 minutes.

Did you ever pull up your ebrake when stopped after coming off the track?

How do you know you warped your rotors? Did the dealer tell you this? I would do a proper pad bedding procedure and see how the brakes feel after that.

Play the fool.....and go to a different dealer. (And of course, change your story)

By the way, my salesman told me that I could track the car and BMW will replace any worn parts as part of the 0 maintnance program!!!! Not to say that a salesman would say anything. When you buy a car like this, you should have some high expectations.

And what would they do? See my post above r.e. the weak link in the M3 braking system. It's not the rotors or calipers.

That seems crazy expensive...

A quick internet search returns a total parts cost (rotors + pads) at $519. I cannot imagine spending more than 1.5 hours of labor on front pads and rotors. Super easy job.

Front M3 Rotors:
Pelican Parts price: $317

Front M3 Pads
Pelican Parts price: $202

It looks like each rotor is $317 for the front. I'm not sure if the pads are $202 each or for the front set. I'm selling my OEM rotors, pads and brakes if anyone is interested.

But I'm not sure if the OP was referring to the Porsche brakes costing $2700 or the BMW.

Good point. My bad. Make that $836. Still, way off from $2700.

Your rotors are likely fine, a few days of moderate street use should take the material off, if not get more abrasive track pads to clean up the rotors, you'll not likely find anyone willing to 'turn' two piece rotors, they'll come out of the lathe in worse shape.

I get this condition everytime I go to the track with PFC01 pads. Try to warm your brakes up and avoid slamming up against ABS when they're cold.

Myth # 1 – BRAKE JUDDER AND VIBRATION IS CAUSED BY DISCS THAT HAVE BEEN WARPED FROM EXESSIVE HEAT.

The term "warped brake disc" has been in common use in motor racing for decades. When a driver reports a vibration under hard braking, inexperienced crews, after checking for (and not finding) cracks often attribute the vibration to "warped discs". They then measure the disc thickness in various places, find significant variation and the diagnosis is cast in stone.

When disc brakes for high performance cars arrived on the scene we began to hear of "warped brake discs" on road going cars, with the same analyses and diagnoses. Typically, the discs are resurfaced to cure the problem and, equally typically, after a relatively short time the roughness or vibration comes back. Brake roughness has caused a significant number of cars to be bought back by their manufacturers under the "lemon laws". This has been going on for decades now - and, like most things that we have cast in stone, the diagnoses are wrong.....

In fact every case of "warped brake disc" that I have investigated, whether on a racing car or a street car, has turned out to be friction pad material transferred unevenly to the surface of the disc. This uneven deposition results in thickness variation (TV) or run-out due to hot spotting that occurred at elevated temperatures....
