Great collection but how come no E90? Also whats up with the GT? Its supposed to be a lineage of 3 Series, not some GT.......that is categorized under the 3 series...

Because I didn't see any M cars. Or an E30 Touring. Perhaps a E30 M3 Cabrio? E46 M3 CSL? How about an E21 Baur Convertible. These are some of the collectable 3ers. This was a 3GT commercial with a bunch of old (but shiny) 3ers in it.

So I take it you believe his collection is invalid because there aren't any M's in it? Hell, that guys collection looked pretty collectible to me as some of those auto's just aren't on the roads anymore or at least not in the condition he keeps them. I'm not trying to rustle feathers man, just trying to understand the thinking is all.

Hello,
maybe this commercial needs some background information.
Of course, commercials aren't reality. But this one is close to reality.
Daniel (I know him since 2001, that's why I recommended him to the film company when they asked me for someone owning E21 and E30 BMWs) really exists. He's a BMW mechanic and works as a service advisor for a BMW dealershio in southern germany. (btw: that's why he wears this genuine BMW overall).
Since he was 18 years old, he collects BMW cars. Just for his personal pleasure, to conserve them in almost mint condition. Of course, he doesn't only collect 3 series BMWs, he also owns BMWs of various other series. What you see in this clip is just a small part of his collection which also comprises M cars like the 320is to be seen in the film.
But, as I already said: He collects these cars for his personal pleasure, not to show them to other people and he adores cars in perfect condition and with low mileage. That's the top priority for him, not the question whether it's an "M", "Alpina" or whatever you want.
Cheers!
Ralf

No it's totally valid because it exists and I'd love to have one of those old E21s (first Bimmer I ever drove and it hooked me). But as others have stated, what does his collection have to do with the 3GT? Are we supposed to accept the bastardation of the 3-Series by the 3GT just because some guy has a great collection of old BMWs? It comes across as bogus because anyone with that love of the 3 series would not like the 3GT. Had it been a collector of say recent 3ers like an E92 CSL, E46 M3, E91 Touring with M sport package, then it would have been a more legitimate sell job.

The 3GT sticks out like a sore thumb.

Hmmm...
I guess I found the problem: Not all BMW models have been available in the US. So in the US the 3 series GT seems not to have a predecessor. The concept of a hatchback with a rear larger than "normal" hatchbacks (like a Focus) but smaller than a station wagon is old for the european market: The E30 Touring and even before the touring 2000 used this concept. The only new thing about the GT is, that it uses the chinese (slightly stretched) 3 series as it's base.
To try to transfer the public image of a successful predecessor (here: E30) to a new model is quite senseless, if the predecessor never was available on the specific market and is not presented in the commercial...

The US market has had both the E46 Touring, E91 Touring, and two versions of the 5-Series Touring, and the 5GT too, so I'm not sure this is a valid argument. In the USA, if you are going to get a dork car like a 3GT or a 5GT, there are plenty of less expensive, and just as capable cars from other manufacturers.

E36, E46, E90 and F3? touring are station wagons. Exactly that's what the E30 touring never was and what it was never intended to be. Just like the 3 series GT.
Btw.: Will the 3 series GT be available in the USA? Last week I saw one at the BMW Welt which convinced me, that it's a car designed for China and the middle east like the 5 series GT is.

You see how dirty that oil was?!? And then right after that he uses what *looks* like the same towel to wipe the roundel.

Really, that's what I said? Most of his cars in the commerical are desirable, but not "collectable".
