Drop in Filter worth it on 2010+ cars

Hey Guys,

I've got a 2012 which of course has the newer paper filter which outflows the older US spec one. Is it still worth upgrading to a BMC or similar drop in filter?

I don't care about it being lifetime as I'll sell the car before the warranty is up.

Sounds worse IMO, but that's just me. Sounds like it's rattling (induction noise from ITB's presumably). Many people like the additional noise but I think it makes the engine sound rough.

just make sure its installed nice and tight. I had my CEL go off about 8 hours after I installed it and apparently it wasn't "sitting right." Had that sucker tightened down good and the airbox sealed good too. Sensitive little bugger.

The sound difference was just so as I could notice. That said since I'm old and grew up with open element filters I like induction roar so every little bit is appreciated.

Always better to get a filter for this car. I have the AA green filter with absolutely no rattles what so ever. Choose your products right and install them properly

I just ordered BMC filter from SonicMS and am hoping for the better sound. My car just came back from the dealer service where they installed new Air filter... I told them they didn't have to but "We have to follow the procedure".

Oh well.

Right now, tunes are not being done remotely. We are working on this currently and hope to have a thread about it up very soon. PM or email me anytime you need something. I am trying to take over the customer service side of the business so that Mike can focus on the tech side.

Nope, definitely installed properly. It sounds LIKE a rattle but it isn't actually rattling
IMO it makes the intake noise too raspy and cheap. Installed stock filter again and noise was gone.
Most who installed a filter seem to like the sound. I don't. Some people like loud exhausts. I can't stand them. (All subjective.)

FYI Other members reported the same noise:

It may be the air, the valves, I don't know. I checked the install and is OK. I came from a BMC (I loved the sound of the engine with the BMC; with the AA engine sound is a bit softer), which also made the "rasp" sound. Therefore I tried the AA, but it too made the sound. AA has a much more solid build quality. The thing is that I don't like this noise. My mind says "thats dirt getting into the engine". I've been thinking about going back to OEM, or even try the Dinan Intake. But spending 1k to have the same result woudn't be nice. Don't know what I'm going to do. That was one of the reasons I was intrested in seeing some filtering data from AA. With the Dinan intake I know is a K&N filter and their data is published on their website (K&N). BTW, ESS also uses K&N filter on their SC's, but of course in that application optimal air flow is the main goal. Thanks Andrew for the replies.

I just popped in an AA Green, not really much of a difference even at WOT. Maybe a little more induction noise, not a huge difference. I wanted to go paperless though and it's a quality filter.

It isn't rattling (guide support in place) and the noise happens mostly at 3-4k RPM like the quoted poster.

However the noise can be compared to a rattle/resonance/rasp under the hood- like you said that's a subjective call, I don't like it
