safe to use TWS 10W-60 that's been boxed for 2 years in a garage?
I have 9 liters of oil for my 09 sitting in a box in storage. Bottles are maybe 3 years old. Was debating using it in the car. each bottle is not opened. The label has started to fall off the bottles though. Does oil break down if it's not used? Should I not use this oil and buy new oil? Suggestions guys? I hate to replace it if it's still good due to the cost of the oil alone.
Thanks.

Its around 80-90 in there most of the year. then again, on the flip side. I guess a hundred bucks on new oil is better than 23K on a blown engine. I don't know if I'd be sleeping well with the old oil in the car.

TWS is considered an outdated oil for our cars, if you want to stick to a 10W60 oil, at least go with the Edge Professional version......or M1 0W40 for $60 at Walmart will get you 10 quarts.

is it just me or does BMW not list the old TWS anymore and only list the edge professional TWS on their site from the link that was listed above?

Good post Mr. Sparkles. So that new "edge professional" is the standard for what oil to put into these motors now? Glad you could clear that up |

So when you speak as if TWS and Edge professional are different oils I think you wrong in the way you are wording it as they are both TWS (its right on the bottle). |

The TWS has a API spec rating of SJ/CF, EDGE Professional is SN/CF which is the latest API specification. SN being for PCMO (Passanger Car Motor Oil) and CF is related to the diesel specification. Shelf life is typically 2 years on most oils as the additives tend to separate from the base stock. You cannot, as has also been stated, just "shake the can" to get the additives back in suspension. Doesn't work that way.

Thanks for the good info everyone.
After reading the link to the Blackstone comparison of TWS 10W60 (old) and Edge Professional TWS 10W60 (new). I've concluded they are not the same oil as the contents/formula are different. Also, as mentioned here the additives fall out of suspension from the oil over time. Therefore, I've decided to order what I believe now to be a better oil (edge professional TWS 10W60) from fresh stock and not use my old garage stored ~3 year old oil. I may be crazy, but why risk the engine for 130 bucks? Cheers, X

Most synthetic oil providers have agreed to communicate a five year shelf life. I expect that's a very safe shelf life.

OK you got me...assuming you don't think that there is some sort of chemical deterioration going on....why should you not be able to mix back in the additive particles that have fallen out of suspension and collected on the base of the container?
OK so a 10 sec hand job might not be sufficient but a half decent paint shaker would do it. |
