Now that the magazine is published I will share a few more photos from the test.

There are many more great shots in the magazine.

I don't know if it's the sun or what, but I just can't warm up to this red. I've seen it in other photos as well, and it looks so dull. How can they get a red wrong? Is it just me?

Nah, I'm with you, Lucid. The red looks a bit dull to me as well. Seems to have a hint of pink in it. Blech.

Good for me because it's one less color I have to beat myself up trying to choose from.

Yeah, especially the third pic reveals some pinkish-orangish tint. Definitely could have been a brighter/deeper red. I am assuming this "Melbourne Red" (why is Melbourne assocaited with red anyways?) is not the regular red one can get the other 3-series cars in?

Solid photos. Thanks Steve.

You have wet my appetite. Where's the main course??
Looked in a local grocery store today, obviously no EVO.

You said there would be vids posted before the mag release?

Will the latest US EVO have this article or only the European version? I am suspecting the latter, see previous chatter on this in this thread.

I have seen the MR look anywhere from terrible (an old post here right after the brochure pics in red were leaked and the car was compared visually to the E46 and E46 looked better to most) to great. It seems to be a metallic red and is nowhere close to a Ferrari or Porsche Red. I think it is unfortunate, as these reds are fantastic, but I think it was also a very decisive decision taken by BMW to do something a bit unique and a bit more understated. Can't wait to see it IRL.

The colours are named after motor racing circuits around the world.

Interlagos Blue (Sao Paulo, Brazil)
Silverstone II (Northamptonshire, UK)
Jerez Black (Southern spain)
Melbourne Red (home of the Australian F1 Grand Prix)

Other M colours on current cars, and from the past.....

Estoril Blue (Portuguese racing circuit)
Le Mans Blue (Famous French circuit, home of the 24 hours)
Sepang Bronze (F1 circuit, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
Indianapolis Red (Needs no explanation)
Imola Red (Former F1 circuit, Italy, home of the San Marino Grand Prix)
Laguna Seca Blue (US members should know this Californian circuit)

......and there are probably some more which I have missed......

BMW sure missed the mark with that red, especially in the shot that has the red RS4 for comparisson purposes. I love red, especially when it has a slightly different hue to it (like my Laser Red G35 which has a bit of blue in it), but Melbourne Red looks just dull and lifeless.

Bring on the white.

Thanks. So why have they not named a color after the ring? Is it too monolithic?

It is nothing short of shameful that BMW doesn't have a beautiful bright red available. Just about every other manufacturer in the free world has one, go figure. The important thing to remember here is that I'm not bitter about it. Much...

Agreed, I don't think it was the "right" nor "best" decision, especially for a car as iconic as the M3. It was just "decisive". I am truly sympathetic. Lucky for me my last three cars have been red and I am a bit over it. Talk about a ticket magnet...

Well, also, if one were to buy the red, one would have to do something about the tail lights as they are also red and fail to establish some kind of contrast with the body panels (I actually like the shape of the tail lights; the headlights don't look nearly as good though).

I really like the red. The orange tint might be from over exposure of the film. But swamp2 is right the red will be a ticket magnet.

Steved can you post some close up of the RS4 as well? So we can compare

That red sucks, sucks, sucks. I agree with the other posts Porsche red is awesome, Ferrari red is great, Corvette red is nice as well. The current BMW red offered on the E92 M3, yuck! I know understated can run into elegance when it comes to BMW's, but sometimes I feel the styling leaves me uninspired to spend premium bucks for something that may seem so common and ordinary. Flame suit on. The first time I saw the new Camaro at the L.A. auto show I literally wet myself. The first time I saw the new E92 M3 on the road here in So-Cal testing about I was excited, but not emotionally overcome. Time and some test driving in the future will tell the tale.

I agree that the new E92 M3 isn't exactly a stunner. I am really not a fan of what BMW has done to the appearance of their cars in the last major redesign--but then who is? However, the new M3 and the other E92s look much better than the E90s. I think the M3 could actually be a stunner if the front end was different--the lights, the grill, tip of the hood, and where the fenders meet the bumper and the lights. The strange curves seem all wrong to me; it needs sharper and straighter lines. The rear end looks pretty good although the bumper could be positioned a bit lower (gotta cover that muffler somehow!). The proportions look good on the sides. The CF roof looks great with light colors...

I recall seeing very few red E46 M3's over the years though I recall tons of red E30/36 M3's. Despite the groans I bet that a not many would actually choose a bright Guard's Red color if they had the choice.
I sure do remember the smurf blue ones however, that was a great marketing decision, but I imagine they took a mild beating in resale...but I could be wrong.
