question about registration

when i first got my car in Feb 07 it was registered in NY, then i moved to california for a year and a half where i drove with NY plates the entire time. before moving back to NY about 2 weeks ago i found out about these atrocious new license plates and quickly registered my car in California.

now that i am back in NY, i found out that my NY plates are expired and have been for several months, but i still have them AND my active California plates which are on my car at the moment. how do i avoid getting these new new york plates? is there any way i could renew my old NY registration or somehow just keep my california plates?

kind of a confusing situation but i hope you guys get it
