Car jerks when cold?

Cars parked over the night.

Start it in the morning (3celcius) and let it idle for 30-60sek before start driving. When I put first gear and start driving the car starts to jerk for a couple om meters then it gets full power.

Anyone else with the issue?

Happened to me this morning. It happens with a lot of manual gearbox cars. We have both a porsche 911 turbo and a mini cooper both with a 6 speed. It happens to all of them. Wouldn't worry about it.

It is more than likely your transmission is just cold.

Good to hear, the car is almost new, got worried there for a bit.

Yes it's a 6mt.

Thanks for the replies!

A word to the wise: It is always better to allow the car to warm up to the quarter mark on the oil temp gauge before driving. Give the M enough time to cycle the oil until the temperature goes up. If you don't you will always have hard or stiff shifts until the car warms up. If you have any service questions, feel free to PM me.

The manual specifically says NOT to let your car sit and idle to warm up. It tells you to start driving it right away.

This is how you ruin your engine!! Warm up at idle??? What BS!

Extra fuel is delivered to the engine when cold causing carbon build up on valves if the car is not driven. How could anyone claiming to be in the service business recommend this. BMW specifically recommends against it.

Porsche had a huge problem with the 993 engines that people allowed to idle when cold. Carbon clogged the injector ports, cause CEL and other issues.

The start of the thread was car jerks when cold. I explained that if the car warms to the quarter mark which takes like 3 minutes the car would feel a lot smoother during shifts. I'm not saying wait until the car is at normal operating temp to start driving. To each his own but BMW says oil change every 15k as well but I will never tell my customers to wait that long for an oil change. If you have any questions feel free to PM me. Have a great day!

+1, I like the way people that do not know anything about cars get on here and start to argue for no reason. I let my car warm up to the 1/4 mark, it does not take long and IT DOES NOT DAMAGE THE ENGINE. I've been working on engines for years.

I always just go; no sitting while warming up. Yep, it's a little rough, but by a mile or less the engine is as smooth as a babies butt.

Cheers.

My DCT does this but replacing the Air Filter with a mach schnell and it helped quite a bit. I still baby it until it warms up but the first few min seem smoother for some reason.

The reason for the car being jerky is the timing goes up to allow the cats to warm up to operating temperature. This is an emissions feature. Since our engines have independent butterfly valves per each cylinder they tend to be very responsive and jerky. With timing set forward and the car being cold with independent throttle bodies, it all combines to make the car very jerky. This can happen with the car at operating temperature if you're being very light on the throttle. I normally turn on my car and let the RPM's drop below 1,000 before I drive it, that's more than enough time to get the oil circulating. The best way to warm up your car is driving it.

I know the n54 has a similar problem as I had a 135i. But believe it doesn't compare to the S65's jerkiness. However, I don't doubt many cars get "jerkier" than usual when cold. Its very annoying on the M tho.
