1/4mi Drag Racing - Stock 2011 E90 M3 M-DCT vs. Stock 2009 R35 GT-R

Attended the Street Legals Drag Racing at Mission Raceway Park (NHRA Division 6) on May 19th 2012. Gotten 5 runs in but had to share this video first. My brother-in-law came with his stock 2009 Nissan R35 GT-R and we managed to request a heads-up race against each other, with me and my stock (except for 275/35R19 DWS tires, which are all-seasons so might even be a disadvantage for me) 2011 BMW E90 M3 Sedan M-DCT.

It's a bring-your-own-street-car-for-timeslips event so the Reaction Time has no bearing on your final E/T.

Track temperature was about 15C (kinda warm night for this time of year). Altitude is near sea-level (the track is about 80km from the Pacific Ocean and right on a river bank).

His car weighed in at 4060lb with him inside and 1/2 tank of fuel. Mine was 3785lb with myself inside and 1/4 tank fo fuel.

Timeslip:

Left: R35 GT-R vs. Right: E90 M3 M-DCT
R/T: 1.588s vs. 0.841s
60ft: 2.001s vs. 2.174s
330: 5.277s vs. 5.720s
1/8mi: 7.999s @ 90.07mph vs. 8.581s @ 86.52mph
1000: 10.374s vs. 11.015s
1/4mi: 12.404s @ 111.08mph vs. 13.067s @ 110.22mph
Right 1st 0.0842s

Even though he (obviously, and should have) beat me on the timeslip, I got him on the heads' up, because... as you can hear, he engaged R-Mode Start but didn't stage correctly. So, he aborted but then the race started, so he reeled me in but ran out of track. My run was done in MDM and D5, so I just watched the tree and wood-ed the throttle on the green.

The slip said I won, though, so a win is a win? Not my problem that he had to spend so much time to activate computer-assisted launches anyways

Another thing I noticed, was that he was consistently trapping in the 12.5s range (sooooo jealous of his 60ft. times) but wasn't trapping much more than 110mph. The fastest he got was 114mph I think. I thought R35 GT-Rs, even the 1st-ever gen, was capable of more than that?

I was consistently in the 13.1s -> 13.0s and trapping 109 -> 110mph tonight with my all-seasons, so although the track might be slow I don't think it's THAT slow....

Yeah, I think the GT-R should be capable of low to mid 11s. Your time seems a bit slow to me too though. I thought stock M3s ran mid 12s.

I agree, a win is a win

GTR driver probably didn't know what he was doing, but you had a great run nonetheless

i would think that his 60' times should be better. My 08 F-250 with a programmer was consistent low 1.8 high 1.7. our M's should be 2.0-2.1 60', but an AWD should be able to launch better

He said that once he launched, he was on full-throttle all the way through, and since the GT-R is a DCT car, I'm not quite sure exactly HOW the driver is able to muck up a straight-line acceleration.... Unless he was shifting late and hitting the fuel cut-off every gear?

His time slip is right there... does anything looks off to you guys? He's running stock-sized pretty-new Bridgestone RE070R tires.

Yeah, I've been out there twice and have been looking for 12s. A month ago I was 13.1s -> 13.3s and this time I was 13.1s -> 13.0s. Keep in mind that I launched from idle and I'm using 275/35R19 Conti DWS in the rear so I'm fairly happy with my E/T. My trap speed looks to be kinda ok though?

The GTR guys is probably one of those guys who takes their foot off of the gas when they shift...fail.

That GTR should have put at least 2 cars on you.

Your 60 foots need to be 1.7 range. Get some drag radials and you'll hit low 12's

Your friend can't drive that GTR!

Based on the time slip, his car is sick, and way down on power. Even his 60 foot time is sick, but the really telling point is that, from the eighth mile to the finish line, he picked up only 21 miles per hour, while you picked up nearly 24 mph. That's power and weight, so he's way the hell off.

Weather conditions seem OK (although don't know the barometer), so that's not the issue.

He should be running a minimum(!) of 116 mph, with higher 'teens more likely.

I currently own an 09 GTR and previously owned an e92 M3. The GTR is way quicker, not even close, as others have said, something is either wrong with the car or the driver

Nice time for a stock M3!

GTR's only run sub 1.8 if using launch control.

The Nissan should not be "way" faster.. High 11s is what I have seen all day long and some 12.1s.
Thats where they should be. They are a heavy car. I have seen dynos at like 405-415 hp to the wheels.

The M3 is where it should be. With better tires mid 12s is where you would be.

Yeah they GTR should've pulled on the back half, very odd.

I've seen one 2010 run which had the 3500rpm launch control vs the 4500 and the best it did was 11.9@118 and it was in very similar conditions @ sea level

that's the worst GTR time I've ever heard in my life. What gas was he running? I can only assume he had a tank of 91 in it and the car was pulling timing and not happy. Tell him to fill with Petro Canada/Suncor 94 next time. Works great.

I've seen them at the strip various times over the years, and stock to modded, they're always staggeringly quick. The slowest one I've ever seen (at our decent track which is generally good density altitude) ran 11.5 @ 118-119...and that was in mid-summer 80 fahrenheit heat. Another one ran 11.0-11.1 all night long with just a tune and no other mods. Trapped closer to 125. These were 2009ish cars I believe (it was in early 2010)

The other ones I've seen, including last month, were even quicker. Stock GTR ran very low 11s @ 120+ all day in April...and the modded one with bigger turbos was comfortably in the 10s and 130+ MPH. That guy complained his car wasn't running very quickly lol.

Just one question, why were you launching from idle and not using LC ?
