E92 M3 now, or wait for the M4?

I have a 2005 E46 M3 with around 84,000 miles. I love the car, but have started to get the itch for something new.

What are the pros/cons of getting a 2012 E92 M3 vs waiting for the M4? How long a wait is it likely to be?

Cool Proven engine

One advantage is the 2012 E92 M3 is "mature" in its life cycle. So most problems should be ironed out.

Plus it's guaranteed you get a natural V8, which is so awesome1

I would go DCT as well.

That's a very, very good point. I'm far less likely to be stuck with all the annoying issues that I'd face early in the model's life cycle.

I'm not going DCT, though. My current M3 is an SMG and I badly miss the driving a real stick-shift. More than anything, I'm looking forward to a clutch and a six-speed.

Financially, it's not a good decision to make if you're buying.

This is the LAST N/A M car for awhile if not forever. The last of the high revving, fire breathing, screaming and ONLY V8 M3. Lease an M3 now, and wait till BMW works out the kinds on the M4 or whatever they're going to call it and then pick one up. I bought a first year Kawasaki ZX-6R motorcycle...biggest mistake I've ever made.

The M3's DCT is unmatched. The engine is amazing, and the car can transform in a press of a button(literally). The sound of the engine at 8,300 revs is an added bonus and VERY intoxicating. The M4 will likely debut in 2014 as a 2015 model from what I have heard. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You shouldn't have any problems with the proper tires. Just don't go out into any blizzards. From a forum member:

Get the e92, last of its kind, last "special" engine and last true ///M3 with the proper name, none of this ///M4 BS.....way to kill a legacy.

But like every other post, it's just my opinion.

Cheers,

Just can't beat the sound of the V8. It's also surprising to me how much smaller our M's are compared to other cars. I was parking the other day and right next to a G37, boy was that car a behemoth! My car looked tiny!

The S65 in our M3 is a poor man's Ferrari V8. It's awesome. I wouldn't pass it up. Get the new M3 in 2-3 years if you want.

If I were in your shoes, I'd get into an e92 now. History tends to repeat itself so I wouldn't even consider the M4 until maybe year 2-3 of its life...BMW should have all the bugs worked out and an LCI in place by then.

I'm hopefully optimistic that the new powerplant will be as exciting as our
V8...

The 2008 M3 has been a dream car because of the V8. I have driven BMW's since 1985 when I was first stationed in Germany and can say the V8 will probably make this a collectors car. I'll keep mine as long as I can (with the 6spd)

My buddy who a big manual guy just sold his 09 ///M with DTC. He missed the manual to much.

Although he was faster at the track daily driving was when he wish he would have a manual.

He buying a 2012 manual. .

My advice is try driving both with a buddy or dealer and pick what you like the most.

Agree the V8 in the M3 is a truly great motor that makes a statement it is a real engineering statement. Get one while you can, also get a V10 M5 or M6 with a MT that is also a sweet motor…….Steve

a true M3 has to be manual, get one while you can ... slightly used 2010, 11 (make sure car was not tracked and is in top shape - dealer certified) or order a new 2012 all depending on your pocket book.
