Funny steering wheel noise/tire and warranty question

Every now and then when I turn the steering wheel to the left only, I hear a whining noise. The best way to describe it is: if youve ever takin your finger and rubbed it around the rim of a wine or champagne glass it makes that weird sound. Ultimately, I will take it to the dealer! Question#2 if I have warranty, can I use it any dealership? question#3 someone told me that my rims will only take runflats. Is this true? I have the premium package 19 inch rims. Thanks!

1. Does it only happen at slow speeds?
2. You can take your car to any BMW dealership. Some only give loaners if you bought the car there.
3. Ignore this person. They are completely wrong. No runflats on M cars.

Yes! Only at low speeds. Like making a sharp u-turn. I thought my ps2 tires were ru nflats! Thats what the dealer said. Thanks!

If only on sharp turns at low speeds - might be diff (classic issue) - but you have a 2008 and would have noticed this issue a long time ago I would think - so some doubt creeps in. Perhaps just powersteering pump. Therefore, I would take to dealer ASAP before warranty runs out.

I'll second the fact that you can use it at any dealer. I am bringing my own in on Saturday for an evaluation of a tire that I'm pretty certain is toast and my service advisor stated that it is "insurance" on the BMW side. They will put in a "claim" and that can be done at "any BMW dealer".

I really like Mountain View (Allison), so I'm driving the approx. 50 miles to get there.

Hi there, just wondering if you ever figured out what this issue was. I have the same problem, at low speeds when I'm going up or down my parking garage at work when I turn left or right I get a whining/grinding noise.

if it were the power steering I would think the issue would be repeatable when I turn the wheels full lock left or right since the pump is working its hardest then. but i have to be moving at low speed to hear it, and it also doesn't appear at high speeds (which I assume the road noise is just drowning it out)

I wondered if it were the diff or the wheel bearings/hubs.

If it is while making tight turns, then you need the differential fluid replaced with the special fluid that contains friction modifier for the differential clutches. Part number is 83 22 2 282 583.

I had the same problem and just topped off the power steering fluid. With the special chf mineral oil. 70 bucks a quart at the dealer.

Every once in a while it happens to me also, just to the left. It appears to come from the front, not the diff. Did you ever this get sorted out?

From what I remember it was whenever I was making slow almost full lock turn turns. I could literally hear it from the front yes. Like a whirring sound.

Thanks man. I checked the level today and it is so low that the measuring thingy doesn't get wet at all. Buying the fluid tomorrow and topping it off.

The fluid itself is pretty expensive, I took it to an Indy and they already had the fluid and just filled it real quick for me.
