small claims court

Has anyone used the small claims court system before? I was thinking of trying to recoop money lost from a signed contract that was broken between myself and another party.

easy as pie. if things are signed and you have a decent story, you'll most likely win. remember, BRING any relevant information. small claims court runs like a revolving door, in and out just like that. now, getting the defendant to pay is another story altogether.

So I could win a judgement and they are not forced to pay? I wonder if it's even worth the hassel to try and recoop $1200 worth of rent money they cost me.

well it's worth a try. they give you a judgment but that's no guarantee that you'll get paid. you can't squeeze blood from a turnip, ya know? you can always put a lien on something, but it doesn't matter if they don't have any property.

I was thinking about going for it and then show her employer since she works for a hospital. But then again I'm not sure if they can do anything about it.

no don't do that. your personal lawsuit with her needs to stay between you, her, and the courts. no counter-suit needed.

Even if you can't collect, the judgement paper is as good as gold, since you can write it off as a loss on your taxes.
