OMFG Kill Me Now....

my original video card broke down (ati x850xt pe pcie) and i installed a 8800gt. it has been hours and the computer has been running fine with the new video card playing WOW, etc.

yesterday night my brother said the computer just shut down when he was playing wow and tells me he smells something burning. i open the case and smell around for the exact spot of the burning smell but can't find it.

so i turn off the psu and unplug the wire for 30 min. i put plug back the psu and turn it on and i turn on the computer and it doesn't even turn on anymore i see the mobo light is on but it is not turning on.

when i plug in the power cord and turn on the psu all LED fans blink for a second and the CPU fan moves for a sec and the mobo light stays on.

when i push the on button, all the fans light up for a second and goes off. the computer doesn't turn on, just the led fans go on for a secon and turn off and that is it. i press the button again and the 2nd time nothing happens, the fans don't even go on for a second or anything just completely dead.

i unplug, turn off the psu, and do it again same thing happens when i push the on button.

what is wrong?

could it be the psu? im really hoping it is not the motherboard. could it be the psu is partly fried and only is producing enough power to turn on the led fans and when i push the on button it doesn't have the extra juice to start the everything?

I'm pretty sure the power supply fried your old video card and may have done the same to the new one ... or possibly the motherboard overvolted ... but it has to be those two. I would start with replacing the power supply as its cheaper and then see if the MB fires up.

The only way to find out is to do busy work.

-Test the video card in another computer
-Get a new power supply or test the power supply in another computer

What size PSU do you have ??

i just got a 550w bfg gs series psu and i installed it. the comp turns on, the fans are running, but i get no signal on the monitor. nor can i turn off the pc by holding down the on button for a long period of time and can only turn it off manually via psu switch.

there still is a burning smell comming in. i can't test the video card b/c i don't have another pci-e mobo.

would the best thing for me to do is change the mobo, cpu, and ram?

Take out the mobo and video card and see if you can tell where the burning smell is coming from. It sounds lke your mobo went south to me.

AMAZING NEWS GUYS!!!!

i bought a bfg gs series 550w psu from best buy to test it out. and when i turned on the pc it went on and off but the burning smell instantly came back. i immediately checked out the source and it was the video card.

my brand new 8800gt less than a day old, if you smell the fan area pure burning smell. so i knew that was out and at this point thought that my old psu was out too.

so i reinstalled my old x850xt pe pci and the pc still didn't boot so at this point i thought the mobo, video card, and psu were all fried. before i disassembled everything i took a wild chance and i put the old psu back with the old video card and what happend?

IT BOOTED!!!

so tommorow i have to return the psu back to bestbuy and get an rma from newegg for a new 8800gt and im all set to go.

i still don't know why the 8800 burned out. i must admit the pc is inclosed in a tight area and it does get hot. i guess the extra slot for the fan to vent out on my x850xt pe kept it going all these years and when i switched to the 8800 which doesn't have a vent out fan all the heat made its total and burned it out.

Your computer is pretty tempermental it sounds.

What kind of case do you use? And how many fans in the case.

you know, I had a very similar problem, I thought it was my video card, so I bought a new one, because the old one wouldn't boot....I disassembled my entire computer and ran it off my table top, mobo sitting there and everything, with the PSU and all...it ran fine! put it back together, no problems since.....sounds like a gremlin...

Sounds like you figured it out. I've had a couple cards overheat on me before. The newer ones clock really high but don't usually come with great cooling solutions.
If you get another high powered card i would suggest an aftermarket cooler like a Zalman.

I just had a 6800 fail because the fan stopped spinning. Found out the fan just burned out.

case for my bro comp is alienware case (huge back in the day ) with 8 fans total if you include the psu. i never had a problem for 3+ years with the pc i built my bro i guess these things are out of bad luck.

i decided im going to change the psu as well when my new replacement 8800 gt from new egg arrives. changing it to a thermaltake modular 550w from my 550w lead power.

what is your setup? I didn't realize that the 8800 GT consumed SO much less than the GTX
