Problem with Performance exhaust: drone at 2.ooo rpm

Hi,

my dealer in Germany installed the performance exhaust last week on my e90 M.
I really like this exhaust, it has a very exotic sound at 3.500-4000 rpm.

They only problem which I have with this exhaust is, that it drones!
My e90 has DKG and I drive it very often in the automatic mode (going to work in the morning, etc).

At 2.000 rpm the exhaust really has a drone. it is really disturbing and reduces the fun which I have with this exhaust a lot.
The automatic mode also switches gears up as fast as possible, so the engine is very often below 2.000 rpm. If you now accelerate slighty, the automatic mode will not switch the gears down. Now I get the drone

Does anyone has the same?
I am wondering, because when I checked in this forum, everyone said, that the performance exhaust has no drone at all...

Another issue which I have detected is, that the performance exhaust expanse when it is warm.
I have the hahmann-diffusor installed on my e90. With cold exhaust the tips are behind the diffusor (around 1 cm) - you can not see the ///M-logo on the tips.
If the exhaust is warm, the tips come out of the diffusor around 2-3cm - now you can see the ///M-Logo.

Has anyone recognized this on his performance exhaust?

Thank you for you helb.

Best regards from Germany,
Michael

There is a difference between drone and normal exhaust sound. What I've discovered is some folks have differing opinions on what the difference is. The only common thing I've noticed is the younger the individual is the more likely they will say the sound you hear is normal exhaust sound, and the older folks will say what you are hearing is drone.

I think it is definitely a drone - you can also feel a slight vibration.

You may have to tighten the bolts, your exhaust is probably loose, I dont have any problems with vibrations, drone or expansion on my exhaust

Even OEM has slight drone at that RPM. BMW put out a tech bulletin about that years ago. In my opinion the performance drone is no more or less than the OEM muffler.

Don't drive at 2,000 RPM The only time the M3 sees that number is as it passes it. I think what you are hearing is normal, expected and not dissimilar to the non-performance exhaust.

You were right, thanks a lot.

The garage shop around the corner just put my M on their auto lift.
One connecting pipe was twisted and one clamp was loose.

It looks like the drone is gone now. I will see tonight, when I drive home from the office.

There should be no drone with this exhaust really at any rpm. Glad you found the reason for the problem. I thought the German dealers were super conscientious about their service work but I guess you can find some who are not so hot too.
