Got smoked by a E36 Non-M Saloon

but he had an "M" badge on his car.

so I was driving on a pretty much empty hwy over the weekend when I passed by a e36 sedan, non M version, dirty, beatup, dented everywhere, with a single muffler canister type exhaust that sounded like a lawnmower. I had no idea what exact model it was because he had a "M" badge on it. Thinking back to the recent "Who you fooling?" thread, I laughed to myself and thought, another poser.

So whatever, I kept on driving, minding my own business. Then about 4-5 miles later, he was no where in sight in my rear view, but all of a sudden, he comes right behind me out of nowhere and starts tailgating me...He was so close that I could clearly make out his face thru my rearview. He looked pretty ghetto, gold teeth in the front n all. It was him and 2 other "hood rats" in the car.

Im thinking whatever, ignore them, plus i got my wife in the car and they looked like highly unsavory characters who might carry weapons in the car.

I was going about 75mph and this bitch wouldn't let up my tail. Kept following me for another 3 miles or so. I slowed down to 60 and he slowed down...well, I didn't want to get off the hwy because he could have just followed me and we might get into some trouble so my wife told me to gun it and get the hell away from him since it was an old ass looking bimmer. I was like, OK...kickdown button, pulled left paddle..car downshifted into 4th and off we went...well, that guy in the e36 stepped on it too and started to run neck and neck with me all the way up to 100 or so. at that point, I let up because it was just too fast, and i got off the ramp since he was ahead and couldn't follow anymore.

I was pretty surprised, up to about 100, when i let up, he was still pulling really fast, he probably went up to 130-140 and just disappeared, then he flashed his emergencies. I'm thinking wtf does this guy have? I remember driving a e36 and they're not that fast.

Ive even had runs with pretty cool e46 m3 guys with mods and all and the e92 ALWAYS pulls on those cars when on a rolling start. They always give me a thumbs up after.. but man, this crappy e36 non m car. what could he have done to make it faster than the s65, and while carrying 3 people?

anyhow, just a story i had to tell.

Maybe a turbo. My E36M3 has over 500 rwhp and over 500 lbs of rwtq and weighs 500 lbs less than my E90M3, and would run away from my E90M3. You can get nearly the same power out of an E36 328i with M52 engine that is turbocharged. Turbos are awesome. A stage 2 centrifugal supercharger might even allow an E36 328i to keep up with or beat the E90M3. I know my E36M3 was faster than my E90M3 when I had a centrifugal supercharger rather than a turbocharger.

Were you already in S mode when you kicked down and pulled the downshift paddle?

You want to drop down to the lowest possible gear with this car. 6-7k RPM is golden.

I think OP did want to drop to the lowest gear which in this case is 3rd if he was above 60, but DCT didn't give him 3rd when he kicked down and pulled the downshift paddle. I suspect OP was in D mode when he executed it or DCT didn't play ball with the multiple downshift request.

Yeah, someone had a red turbo E36 on the way back home from Bimmerfest East last year. That thing was HELLA FAST. I'm still looking for that guy!

I can understand the DCT not wanting to go that low with high rpms if the car was still being broken in. But did you try multiple times? As crazy as it seems it may have been humor error. You may have not put it to 3rd when you downshifted so fast.
Not to start a war but I didn't like on my 335iS how the dct did not shift all the way when I would downshift very fast. I opted for the manual because of this.

I do find that at 65-80mph DCT sometimes decides to select 4th instead of 3rd when you kick down and pull the pedal. What I do is, select 6th if I'm at 7th then kick down and pull downshift paddle - this definitely gets it into 3rd at those speeds, or kick down and pull downshift once and if it didn't select 3rd, I'll quickly pull downshift one more time to get it into 3rd.

OP wasn't trying to pull the downshift paddle multiple times. DCT has a function where it can downshift to the lowest gear for max acceleration. To do this, we depress the kick down button and pull the downshift paddle once whilst in S mode. It's a fantastic feature.

I think dual clutch gearboxes have their quirks and it takes time and experimentation to get the most out of them, especially when there are 5 Drivelogic settings for D and 6 for S - each for every possible road/track driving situation. So in a way, they can be just as involving as a stick shift, in the sense that you can decide the best settings for the prevailing conditions, which are obviously constantly changing.

Not a DCT owner but did have SMG in my last M3. Can't you just pull the paddles to get 3rd (in this situation) and go from there? Don't understand the need to hit the kickdown, then pull a paddle, then ... to do what you can do for yourself a la SMG?

Yes, you can pull the downshift paddle x number of times to get to your desired gear, but DCT came up with this feature in S mode which makes it far quicker than downshifting multiple times especially when you are cruising in 7th gear.

Obviously this is no more than a second or two difference, but it's pretty useful when you are on a single carriage way and stuck behind traffic, and when a short but safe overtaking opportunity arises, executing it in the shortest time is always preferable.
