Winter/Summer Setup Questions :(
Hey guys,
I've been running my e92 for almost 2 years now with my contisport contacts( I never drove in the winter) But now I have to start using the car more and of course, when the conditions are terrible I definitely plan on not driving the M. Basically I just wanted to know a couple of things... 1. When do you guys usually change into your winter setup? 2. I don't mind using my ZCP's in the winter BUT would it be wiser to have a dedicated tire/wheel combo for winter and one for the summer? 3. What size Dunlop Wintersport 3D do you guys run on 19" ZCP's??

If you are going to be driving the ///M through the winter I would get a dedicated set of winter tires and wheels. Driving on summer tires through the winter is not ideal. I believe most summer tires are only good to about 40 degrees F. When the temps get lower than that those tires will get very hard and won't have much grip.
Getting a wheel/tire set will probably end up saving you money long term because you won't have to deal with mounting and balancing everytime you change over, plus 18" tires will be cheaper than 19". When I winter drove my ///M I ran a set of stock 18s (purchased here on the forums) and ran 245/40/18 and 255/40/18. You can pick up a set of stockers for like $800 on here. Plus you don't want to ruin your comp wheels. I ran Dunlop Wintersport 3Ds. |

I was planning on turning my ZCP's into winter tires with the dunlops you mentioned and buying summer tires with new rims come spring.
I have a cut in one of my tires and need to change tires this week. The issue is I think it's to early to put winter tires which puts me in a weird position.

I agree. Find a used 18" rim/tires setup for the winter. People are always selling them on here. You can save yourself a lot of money since they're about $1800 new on Tirerack.

You could certainly turn your 19s into winters but 19" winter tires are expensive... Last edited by M3 Esq; 09-16-2013 at 02:20 PM.. |

I guess I'll try to find a winter setup...
Since only 1 of my tires has a cut (not leaking air but I want to avoid driving on it) is it ok to simply replace it with a used tire, same brand and size?

That would be fine, however I would look for a tire that has a similar tread depth as the other three tires.

I've been using the OEM 19 with Blizzak's as a dedicated winter setup and they have yet to fail me. Converting to a stud kit makes wheel swapping much easier as well.

I use the same as ^... I use zcp's as my winter set up and right now they are on "all seasons"(above). I do have the blizzaks which have been amazing, so I may actually use them instead and take the "all season tire" off. I live on a slight hill, as well as my driveway, so the snow tire helps. I do not put them on though till the temps stay below 45-40 degrees for a consistent time frame. Usually Nov.
