Oil change opinions while doing European Delivery?
Hey guys,
I just hit 1200 miles on my M3 while doing ED. I have another ~ 200 miles to go before dropping off the car. Now my questions: 1) I'm assuming the engine will be ok for an additional 200 miles if I don't get it done here? So the service will likely be done when the car gets back at around 1400 miles. 2) Oil changes here will run me around 450-500 euros..so about $600. I've been told ill be reimbursed at the rate that dealers charge in the US. So My question is, how much do dealers(Socal if that makes a difference) typically charge for an oil change? 3) I read that the 2012 or 2011 M3s and onwards had some different part numbers for oil changes. If true, can some please provide those numbers. If not, what are the part numbers I need to look for? 4) Finally, is there anything I need to let the shop know? BMW suggested this shop, but I can't really vouch for the legitmacy myself. Which is somewhat concerning given I don't speak the language very well. Thanks in advance! |

From what I've read you should be reimbursed in full. During my ED last month I had the 1200 mile service done at a dealer in Heidelberg and I was reimbursed the full amount ($650) no questions asked by my U.S. dealer. I can't say how much U.S. dealers charge but for reference the 9L of Castrol TWS 10W60 oil was the equivalent of $240 on my invoice, yet a quick Google search shows I could buy that myself for $130 in the States.

OK, I think you're talking about just the oil, no filter and no shipping. Seems the $160 is still the cheapest online price to be found.

I've read you'll get reimbursed if its done at a dealer.

Do it while you are in Europe. That way you can still enjoy your car on unlimited roads As far as the dealer goes, see if they are M certified. That is usually stated on their sign. If that helps at all...

If you are just going to drive normally, car is going to survive an extra 200 miles
If you have the opportunity to drive on unlimited roads, change the oil there, and forget the amount of money they will not reimburse you for. Topping out the M3 on the autobahn is one of the best experiences I had with this car... will likely not have the opportunity to do that in the states |

I say don't worry about the extra 200 miles. The VPC will do the 1200 mile service when it lands back in the states.
Why bother with the hassle of reimbursement, when the VPC can handle it all behind the scenes? |

Thanks for the replies fellas.
I think I'm going to just hold off on it until the car gets home stateside. Considering the closest is too far, I'd rather not risk some guy with no experience working on an M3 mess something up. That's to add the fact that I reviewed the paperwork and it says it has to be done be done by a dealer. Being close to $700 out of pocket isn't a risk I'd want to take. If anything changes ill be sure to let the forum know as I don't think this is a very common situation. |

Meh, get it done at a local BMW dealership. There's really nothing special about the M3 oil change over and above any other car, apart from the fact you MUST do it at the 1200ish interval or commit the car to being worth less than a car that had it done on time for the rest of it's life.
That said, 1400 is no big deal.

There is no such thing as an M certified dealer in Europe. In Germany it is either a Niederlassung (Company owned dealership) or a privately owned dealership (Betriebsstätte). Either one will properly service your M3. In fact they'll likely do so in a manner and with competence you'll be hard pressed to find in the BEST stateside service department.

OP, just drive the extra 2000 miles, and get it done at redelivery. I wouldn't think the 200 miles is worth the hassle of getting reimbursed, and 200 autobahn miles are probably some of the easiest this car will ever see. About the only scenarios I'd think justifying a change still in Germany are going seriously over (ie. 2k+ miles), an extended stay where you are going over and have the time, or if you wanted to do an oil change before running on Nürburgring (I can't imagine ever running on Nürburgring during initial break-in, though I know some will do that)

Remember, 1200 mile service also includes tranny and diff fluid changes as well.
I'd do the extra 200 miles and let BMW do the full service once the car is back in the USA. |
