Thanks all! I was hoping the M3 community would be interested in a little non-M3 action! Regarding HPDE use, several clubs allow open wheel including Rezoom, Chin, and I believe HOD. I run mainly with Rezoom. I don't like being on track with large cars, but I can get by them so fast it isn't really an issue. I'll be sure to share more in the future, I'm sure it will only get more intense as I get used to the car etc.

If anybody wants to learn more about getting into open wheel or FM check out apexspeed.com, lots of good forums and good cars for sale (or just PM me).

It's really the most fun you can have on the track!! Going fast is one thing, avoiding wheel-to-wheel contact is another.....

After driving a formula race car, the M3 (and other sports cars) will feel like you are driving a school bus.

It's funny how much money we spend to go a few seconds faster than you can do something like this and shave some major time!

Weight and downforce is everything in racing..

Maybe one day. My issue is that I love driving sports car on the street and with current income would have to sacrifice it for something like this.

Great move! Video was awesome

where did you buy it, or even look for them?!!?

i drove the skippy formula cars, so a near similar design (formula fords, i think, instead). also sequential shifter, but not h pattern. you have to heel toe to downshift.

i absolutely loved it. my m felt like a boat driving home.
i completely agree with you. other than being on the track with all the cars, there is no reason not to use a dedicated true open wheel car for a real driving experience.

here is my vid

Trey,

How tall are you? At 6'4", I am restricted to most formula cars. Do you know of a tall tub in that chassis?

I did spend a whole bunch of time in a Radical SR3 so can experience the fun you had! AWESOME!!

You can definitely fit in a "tall man" FM (FM with higher roll bar). You
"might" fit in a standard FM. I'm 6'1" and fit in my standard car.

Check out apexspeed.com in formula mazda classifieds for cars for sale, they are always a few up.

Definitely worth the purchase

Yup. It's a van diemen w/ a 2L ford/cosworth...only about 150hp. On my very first race, this car was 15 secs faster than my best lap time on the slightly modded e46 m3 at summit point. the most phenomenal part to me was the braking. Initially I would often have to get off the brakes and back on the gas just to get to the turn.

For those of you who know the track, from turn 1 thru turn 5 is considered a "straight" in these cars since we don't lift. Simply a blast!!!

+1

I've been lurking on the Ariel Atom forum for a while as there's nothing like driving a car with a high power to weight ratio. I got the bug after driving a friend's Lotus Exige S through the Malibu canyons... awesome!

Thanks for sharing

Neat ride.

I have one question though: why is the RPM gauge rotated?

Thanks for sharing. I considered buying a FM a few years back but backed out because of the amount of upkeep that is required. But the sensation you get from an open wheel race car is unbelievable

Quick question: what is the safety record on FM?

Drivers typically rotate them to where rev limiter is vertical. It makes it easier to tell at a glance how close you are to rev limit.

The upkeep isn't so bad price-wise, it is just a different animal having to check gears and replace dog rings etc. But price wise it is at least as cheap as a E92 M3 track car maintenance.

They're overall pretty safe from what I've gathered, but they almost always roll if you have tire to tire contact. There has been 1 death in the last several years to my knowledge, and it is unclear whether the car even killed the guy (think he also had a heart attack or something). There are only 200-300 of these things out there, so don't know how much safety info is available. But the whole car is a roll cage, and the only thing I'm personally concerned about is a bouncing tire etc. hitting my head.
