This is the Rig that Helped Develop the E39 M5 Suspension and Brakes

This is the Rig that Helped Develop the E39 M5 Suspension and Brakes

COMMENTS

Here's a great throwback look at how the iconic E39 M5's suspension and brakes were developed in the late 1990's with the help of a dynamic testing rig. The rig accelerates and decelerates while the wheels are turned and brakes applied by a human operator.

That is amazing, I wonder what kind of results were obtained with regards to tire wear, and feel. Or was this durability testing.

I think that's harder than I ever pushed my E39 M5. I remember they had a rig to simulate driving the Ring that they used to test suspension.

Always cool to show these old testing setups.

Full scale rigs like this are pure sex to engineers. The validation options are almost endless and it really lets you optimize design. Just need to make sure you keep a bit of human touch otherwise you take away some of that enthusiasm. Kind of how people tend to say Mclarens are amazing machines, but lack soul when compared to a Ferrari.

Just think about what they must have now to aid in this validation!

Fascinating to see how the tires keep their their structure / rigidity. Also impressive to see just how close the rim comes to touching the road surface...wow!

For that day/time that is some engineering straight from area 51 or the development for the space shuttle. Bravo to BMW, that's why they were the best 70's thru early 2K

Now, for the million dollar question???, does BMW use these type of Rigs to
test current vehicles????? I have a feeling//////NO, No way......

today much of the validation is simulated via computers. They build test rigs to test what they believe is the final/approved design.

Way back when, those rigs were modified several times until the final design was achieved.

NASCAR uses these 7post shaker rigs and have the ability to load the car based on data obtained running on a particular track. This allows them to change components and then run a simulation with all conditions being constant. If it proves positive then they can take it to a track and have a live person test it. I assume that they still use this. Much cheaper than live testing. It's pretty awesome.

Fantastic vid!

I'm surprised the E39 M5 shows a soft suspension setup here, it compresses easily compared to todays sports cars suspension of a similar category

I miss these videos. There's one floating around of an engine rig for Porsche engines.
