Nasty grinding noise power shifting into 2nd

So this has happened to me a few times already and it's really annoying. Basically when I'am redlining first and power shifting into 2nd, sometimes I get this nasty grinding noise and it's probably the synchros rejecting the shift? What causes this and how can it be avoided. I like to power shift.

Let up off the gas man. I don't know one good driver that promotes this type of shifting. Glaze your clutch, and that'll be it for your car.

Actually the same thing used to happen to me with my 335, but usually in the morning when I first started driving the car normally. Not redlining. I wonder if this is a common problem with all BMW 6MT?

Only rockapes power shift!If you wanted to do full throttle upshifts you should have got a M-DCT.

We'll keep your comments to yourself. I got your point. Don't powershift at redline. It's a pretty simple concept to grasp. Sometimes you get excited, it's just human nature.

I do have to agree. Should of left out the "power shifting" when you first posted. I know a couple of people who had to replace their clutch b/c of power shifting, NOT a smart idea pal.

If my car is any indication, yes. The 1-2 gear change is quite notchy until tranny gets to full operating temperature, so I wouldn't attempt any 'aggressive' 1-2 shifts until then. I'm still in break-in (1,600 miles), so I hope it gets better, but that's the way it is now. By the way, the fluid change at 1,200 made no difference. Take care.

Yea the same thing used to happen to me in my 335, while performing regular shifts from 1st to 2nd. I didn't know a 6mt needs to warm up?

You didn't realize a 6MT needs to warm up? What do you think is inside the transmission case if it is not some form of oil? All oils have slightly different viscosities and are designed to to provide the optimum performance/protection when at the engineered operating temperature. I sure hope you don't abuse your engine by not allowing it to warm up to the operating temperature before red-lining it. Some of your statements sound like you could be characterized as abusing your M3. Note the warranty does not cover abuse.

Listen no need for trash talk. Same thing happens to a lot of aggresive drivers. To power shift just make sure you hit the clutch to the floor then shift fast. I tried it like this and it was perfect plus there is other drivers that said the same. It's a little tricky but it can be done. The m3 is made for the 2nd gear to be fully engaged for it to be powershifted into 2nd just before redline.

Yeah..I dunno why you guys are flaming him. Markymarc, this is a known characteristic of many m3 6mt's. Although some ppl claim they don't have it. There are manual cars out there that I've raced that you can easily powershift, everytime, without grinding.

No Grinding sounds at all!!!!

Thanks for the feedback. Some forum members obviously have a lot more class then others. BMW markets this car as performance oriented and bred for the race track. Even in their owners manual they discuss tracking the car. This transmission should be able to handle whatever I give it.

Why did I spend $100K+ on a sports car and I'm not able to drive it in an aggressive fashion. If I want to abuse my car, then I will do so. My original post was inquiring on how to prevent the grinding that comes from powershifting. For those of you that track your car, you know that every millisecond counts. A powershift into 2nd or 3rd can be the difference between achieving a good time and achieving a great time.

No I'm talking about a full out grind and the gear box completely rejects the shift. The clutch is fully opened.
