08 GPS Upgrade to HD System

I've read some of the comments about the GPS system in other forums. The 08 DVD based system is far from perfect. Sometimes I've resorted to using my TomTom. There is a forum that describes how to upgrade the iDrive to that of the 09/10 version. My question is this. If the switches can be upgraded and the functionality remains exactly the same has anyone tried to take the HD based system (if they have improved the interface and POI's) and encorproate it into the 08. I still keep my TomoTom as back-up but, would really prefer to use the onboard stuff.

Working on it... should have some definitive results in about 3 weeks.

That sounds great. Is this a BMW solution or an aftermarket product? And, is it DYI or a shop install. Any little bits of info would be nice, if you know.

This will be a custom BMW retrofit as BMW will not offer an OEM retrofit for pre-2009 3-Series... http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159604
