Is this actually a 3,318 pound car? Usually BMW adds about 165 pounds to their weight estimates. We may actually be looking at a power to weight ratio of 7.4 straight from BMW!

If this engine ends up in the 2012 M3, I'd need a new pair of pants.

When, if ever, has BMW changed the engine in the midst of a model cycle in a M car (aside from E36/8 M coupe)?

I've already got a M3 E90, with M Performance exhaust, but I want that M3 CRT so badly!

It has all I want:
- 4 doors (yes, that car is my daily car and I want to carry some babies behind me easily...)
- motor of the M3 GTS (!!!)
- (finally) great brakes (6-piston front and... 6-piston rear! even the GTS has "only" got 4!)
- and... ok, I'm not a real fan of the color choices but I'm ok will all the "extra" options

For those who don't understand the necessity of GPS and others... Buy a M3 GTS instead!
This car has 4 doors! My wife will drive it!
And BMW has made the ultimate sedan with the last natural V8 engine.

I want one, for sure!

The people on this forum seem to not understand the point of an M3. It's a sports car that can be adapted for track use, not a track car.

The CRT has creature comforts such as Nav and Stereo because it's still a daily driver car! Lightweight isn't even in the name! It's a car mainly to preview what Carbon Fiber technologies BMW is currently developing and how they can be implemented. The technology just happens to save 100 pounds in this specific application...

Am I the only who think that the car is not sharp enough?

I had expected something more spectacular, much more Motorsport, and much less Marketing.

I really like the rear individual seats. Would be nice if they offer them from the very beginning for M3 E90.

I don't like the matt paintwork, two tone leather, DCT and plethora of electronic toys. I thought it would be a GTS version of M3 E90. It isn't definitely.

I wish the went in the direction of the M3 CSL. Carbon roof, black/gray alcantara, very little electronic gadgets (no navi, no AC, no radio and speakers, 6MT instead of DCT etc). I think further weight reduction of at least 50kg would be possible.

Probably E90 cause with those seats it would be very hard to get into the back of an E92. But yea, you could just buy a pair of Recaro seats and save 80 lbs. and an Akra exhaust, and lightweight battery and save more weight.

I'm guessing part of BMW doing this is to test out the waters with some new technologies that might appear in the next gen M3

You're barking up the wrong tree then IMO. Every day it seems BMW leans more and more towards style over substance. Can't blame them...it sells cars.

I love it!!! especially those rear seats but the red hood venst and door sills are a bit too much for me. the red interior would take a while for me to get used to, or maybe it never would

This is pretty cool. However, it does bring me quite some quite some ambivalence. Certainly repeating/echoing many prior comments:
  • This should have been done on the E92 not the E90. If we accept it was done on the E90 since it will end production sooner and as a teaser of the future I can swallow that.
  • There is a great deal of contradiction in having Navi, high end audio and alarm in a weight savings oriented car. However, most of us should admit that for a trackable daily driver we do want both luxuries and lightweight.
  • I appreciate BMW M choosing the M-DCT only for the model. Sure it weighs about 40 lbs more but is roughly equivalent to 20 hp in terms of performance. That is a great ratio.
  • The sandwich/core construction of the hood is impressive. This is not your typical crap aftermarket CF only hood. The core is what gives it the rigidity of steel and makes it much much more effort to manufacture. If this is any sort of sign of things to come in production M's it will be a great thing.
  • Seats are a work of art. Things like this should be an option in production M's or perhaps track oriented production models of which have been hinted at for future M cars.
  • The aluminum hood is VERY light in the first place. Dropping 50% of its weight is not much in an absolute amount but a very impressive percentage.
  • Standard USA E90 M3 has 47.8% rear weight distibution. Getting to 48.4% is not much gain. In general BMW needs to drop this whole 50-50 thing and shoot for 55% rear.
  • Brake calipers look like Brembos.
  • Lot's of reiteration of completely standard M3 specs in the spec list. Such as bedplate, throttle butterflies, knock system, wet sump, rear subframe. Blah, blah, blah.
  • I'm highly confident they could have sold a lot more than 60 or 70 of these.

I think this is the common misconception. In my opinion if it was the GTS version of the E90 it only makes sense that they would have named it the GTS sedan and not CRT. Its obvious the focus of the car is not on it being like the GTS but more showing what can be done with the CF.

Have to agree with this... they could sell ice to an eskimo. No matter how dumb the idea, they could market it. If I saw a BMW roundel on an Iphone, I'd probably buy it
