Long crank on cold start

10 May 2016

The car's currently in for diagnosis, but if anyone else has seen and fixed this issue, I'm keen to hear from you. Has only just started happening.

1. Long crank on cold start after sitting overnight:

2. Second start after successful crank:

3. Third start at end of the day:

30 May 2016

After two weeks at P&P, no success in diagnosing the cause. My car checks out fine mechanically. As a stab in the dark, I did have the idle control unit replaced, but there was nothing wrong with the original. No codes thrown, so the shop was doing things "old school" trial and error. Has three workshops stumped at the moment (including a BMW shop), and here in Brisbane alone, six other cars are known to have this issue at this time. Can't be coincidental.

Will post something in the US forum to see if this has been seen before.

9 July 2016

New coils and spark plugs have been fitted. Here's what a cold start looks like now (on stock tune):

This is the same tank of gas as in the last vids. Car fires normally, but the "RPM hunt" is still there for 20 secs before it settles down.

14 October 2016

Switch to lower octane fuel.

This was the recommended suggestion by BMW (locally), after their known occurrences of this issue increased. I have now run the car through 2 tanks of 95RON fuel, then back to 98RON. I observed an improvement when starting on 95RON, then poorer starts again on 98RON. I have just topped the tank with 95RON again, and this is the start behaviour:

Yeah I had this issue on my e92 DCT 2012. I took it to bmw (as check engine light had come on with long cranks!)and they kept it overnight. Upon diagnosis, they suggested changing spark plugs (of which I had to hold off unless I wanted to pay $780 for them and plugs are avail at my next service interval in 3mths)!
Anyway, I tried longer runs (so I drove to Adelaide from Melb - no diff). I always used BP ultimate, so I tried Shell V power. Since then (2months ago), long cranking has shorten to only a couple of seconds. Hopefully with new plugs, that should also sort out issue. I've only done 24,000k's on mine.

Hope this helps a little!

Me neither.... and mines pretty long in the tooth. Running BP Ultimate and changed the plugs about 5,000km ago... all good in the hood!

I experience it with cold start. I think it's an age thing. My spark plugs are three years and 25k km old

There is something wrong. It's cranking for a long time and the rpm needle is bouncing before settling on 1k rpm. I thought the idle rpm was 1500. Have it checked out. Mine is nothing like this.

Looks like the idle control valve when it can't idle clean like that.

Mine sometimes has the similar long crank when 'cold' but once it finally kicks it's fine and idles fine. It's weird though, it only does it at my house, never anywhere else. Workshop can't fault it either.

My vehicle has a hair short of 100k (161k KM) miles and it never started like the way your car started. Temps ranged from frigid -10F this past winter to as hot as 115F when I was in the southern U.S.

Why don't you try pulling some codes

Maybe a stage 2 tune and cat delete to eliminate the cold start cycle will help. Does sound sick until eventually settled down. Scary!

Install the new plugs . They are cheap out of the US even with the exchange rate as it is.

Good luck.👍

It will be worth sending this clip to my friend Belgium///3. I smell more than an idle valve issue here, maybe even bearing. Very metallic idle noise, and watching the clip to the end, the idle drops below 1k rpm.

Is this car supercharged? All those gauges give the picture of some extensive engine modification and plumbing.

I don't hear metallic or bearing noise?

Could also check if a spark plug is loose

Potential causes I've seen so far
Bad ground
Idle Control Value
Bad low pressure fuel sensor
Throttle actuators
Pre-Cat O2 sensors

Mines getting worse as the weather gets colder but I've no idea which of the above potential fault would be most affected by temp change....

I now know of three cars that this issue is affecting here in Brisbane. All are currently in for diagnosis.

Interesting. My battery is only 18 months old, and voltages are normal.

Mine does the same on and off. Haven't really had much time to diagnose or check faults with ISTA-D.

Keen to hear if you fix it and how.

Interesting. Mine does that as well but only after parking it at the Brisbane airport carpark over 1 or two nights, doesn't do it any other time. Idle is fine after it starts.

I have stage 2 tune and test pipes, maybe its the battery I have not check that.
