M3 Nurburgring Time = 7:57
Yes they did it. Straight from the mouth of M boss, Richter. He claims the car is 25 seconds faster than the last M3. The Sportauto (which is "official" in most folks books) time for the E46 M3 was 8:22 so 8:22 - 0:25 = 7:57.
Link to the original Richter video here (from the launch in Australia). Way to go BMW breaking the 8 minute barrier. It is a supercar! Comments:

Previous M3
Uhhhh, he did say "25 seconds faster in comparison with the old M3" and those are QUOTES. Maybe he means the E30 M3
Not to mention all comparison in this segment were against the previous model M3, engine weight, redline, consumption, etc. |

Shouldn't we just wait until Sportauto does its test?
This is speculative, to say the least.
We have no idea what time this guy was using as his reference E46 M3 lap-time. The authoritative Sportauto time will be on stock tyres. What we still need is an absolute time rather than a relative one, measured objectively and independently. |

I'm sure H. Richter has the mathematical wherewithal to subtract 25s from his E46 time and tell us his E92 time properly, but he chose instead to talk in riddles.
Furthermore, if we are going to be fair to the issue and compare apples with apples, we should compare Sportauto times only with one-another. If SA gets a time in line with the 7:57 prediction I will be delighted. |

'Ring time
He could have been talking about the results of internal BMW testing.

surely though if he is talking about an internal time, this is likely to have a correlation with 25 sec less than sport autos time. ie if bmw driver can go round 25 sec quicker, i'm sure a sa driver can do the same.

last video states 8:05 is the time..
swamp:
should watch the last question and answer video of the autralian release when they talk to the technical director of M. States the new m3 is 15sec faster than the 8:22 sportauto time..also states 911 is no longer a competitor since the new m3 is quite a bit faster...lots of interesting tidbits in this very LONG video.. |

It's also not 8:05. So, not sure what he is saying.

Well, misstatements and math are no way to figure this out. We need a *published* time. That being said, very promising!

Hi Epacy.I perfectly remember that in the past you and many others wrote that the time of 8:12 was a BS. I know this and remember ,but since it was reported inside "BMW Canada" and not only on Autoblog.nl, many months ago and I don't know ( I will check) if it is still published, can you confirm me that it was only a rumor and why BMW Canada published it?
I have an hot discussion () inside another Forum where they are sure that this is the official Ring time!!! Can you or someone else help about this BS and give me more info? |

It wasn't official and BMW Canada pulled it shortly after we started posting about it here.
Tell them if it is official to point you in the direction of where that time is detailed as such. Furthermore, only BMW Canada had this time, no other site. Not even the international site.

I say no freakin way the E92 M3 did a 7:57. No way. Was it on slicks and stripped out? Has the track been changed allowing for faster times now? There is no way the improvement would be that great over the E46. However, I have no problem admitting I'm wrong when we see an official time! |

Good discussion
Good discussion guys. Exactly for the reason that a BMW person did not say, "the time is X" I did not say in my post title nor body say that this was an OFFICIAL time. Richter is quite good at "talking in riddles" as 13eastie points out. The last riddle he gave us was X seconds faster than any previous M car. Not to mention his talk about the car being "lighter" (lighter than what). This riddle That got us down on the 8:0X range.
ajj: I am surprised there is a direct contradiction between senior M folks as you mention. I have tried two computers and 4 browsers and just can not get to the end of the 4th video. Can you please provide a direct quoation? I would have posted this contradiction for sure as it is a HUGE contradiction - 10 seconds. As far as comparing to the 911 I have not found a Sportauto time for the base 911 but I suspect 8:07 would be quite a bit faster. However it is not faster than the 911S whose time is 8:05. I like Epacy's rational approach to placing upper and lower limits on the cars time given no official time. The best we have right now is a provisional time of 8:03 with Cups. I do hope to find out the whole story on whether Cups can be purchased on the car, in the showroom, and if not, what is the Sportauto time without Cups. Too many variables 6MT, M-DCT, Cups, no Cups, ugh. |
