Anyone go from DCT to 6MT?

I stopped into my local dealer today, and I told him the reasons why I want to trade my 09 for a 13 M3.

He agreed with all my points.
-No warranty on my car
-M4 still 2 years+ out
-Last Year of the V8 M3 will retain value well

He disagreed with my idea of going from my DCT to a 6MT.

I was just wondering if anyone has made this switch. Otherwise, I dont know if I could buy the exact same car as I have...again lol.

DCT to 6mt

I did.... I have mixed emotions about it. On one hand the 6MT is more engaging to drive and when you get the shifts down it can be sweet. On the other hand, unless you are very good I seriously doubt that you can beat the DCT off the line and to the end of the 1/4 mile. ALSO I highly suggest you drive the 6mt, first to second is notchy (do a search) and it takes practice to get it right.

If you plan on keeping the car after warranty I'd go with the 6mt.

my 2 cents

DCT all the way how you going to eat a burger and dust that Audi or Benz next to you lol. Na but my thoughts would be drive the 6mt and DCT back to back and the one that puts a bigger smile on your face go for it. Because I'm sure they both will.

I switched from '11 DCT to '13 6MT.

First off, I love the DCT. It's snappy, confident, works hard even on track. I wanted to get 6MT because I like manual shifting. Sometimes with DCT I would try to shift it unthinkingly as if it were manual, especially if I had been driving my racecar. I'm not concerned about 1/4 mile racing. This isn't a drag racer, it's a road racer.

Also I plan to keep this car a while and I was a bit concerned that the DCT is pretty much not dealer-serviceable -- except for a few peripheral aspects, my understanding is that they swap the whole thing and send the old one to BMW to be rebuilt there. That could make for one heckuva repair bill. I also don't like the nanny features like throwing you into neutral if you crack open your door, e.g., to see better when backing into a tight space.

Maybe I made a mistake and it will turn out that the DCTs live forever and the 6MTs need all the TLC. But I have no regrets.

Since you have a DCT you know how it feels like, I presume you already drove a manual car before, so now only you can make that decision based on your preferences!

I went from DCT to 6sp and if I ever get another M, it will have DCT.

To put this in perspective, I had about the worst DCT experience out there, and would get another one. Just take a look here.

Funny post.

OFCOURSE the local dealership isn't going to disagree with you on trading to a new '13 M3, talk about a biased, self-serving opinion. Plus, he'll want you to get DCT because it's more money in his pocket.

Everyone who has DCT will say it's the BEST, and everyone who has 6MT will say it's the BEST. This is a never ending saga ...haha. My vote will always be MT, it's challenging, fun, engaging to drive cars with MT, and heck, it won't be around for much longer it seems...so enjoy it while it lasts in these V8s...

By all means I didnt want to start a war. I see the benefits of both.

That said...I've never driven the 6MT. I do love the 6MT in my bros 1M though

I don't always drive, but when I do, I prefer a DCT over a 6MT.

I'd love a manual too but prefer my flappy paddles. On the e46, I would have traded the SMG for 6mt...that's another story tho.

DCT is awesome, however, as someone who learned how to drive on manual cars its a different type of nostalgic feeling...I will buy manual cars until they stop making them. Obviously DCT is superior in most timed aspects. Manual puts a smile on my face.

Check out this poll (unless you seen it) ---> Click to Open

I went from a e46 SMG to e92 MT then to DCT and love them both. Truth be told I do prefer now the DCT since it gives me the choice paddles or auto. Also no more issues first to second gear

Exactly. DCT tech will only get better, but good luck getting an NA M V8 with a manual transmission ever again after this one.
