Here's an honest question and not intended as a slight or dig on anyone:

When laying out the bearings for pics with the cylinders labeled, do people tend to just number them sequentially in the order they came out 1-8 (or 10) when they are actually 5-1-6-2-7-3-8-4 along the crank or do people actually rearrange them in cylinder number order?

Not that it makes any difference at all, but something my semi-OCD can't let go of.

This is getting worrying. These cars are aging and the mileage is going up. I hope we don’t have more and more main bearing problems.

How did your rod bearings look at 80k when you changed them?

Not my car. Dealer purchased at auction for resale. Engine had a tick. 80k mileage is information given from the previous owner to the dealer.

I believe so yes. The others looked like OE bearings.

Oh we will. They are just as much of an issue as the rod bearings.

Yeah... OE bearings are no good. I think most of us have established that. Regardless if you have the last S65 motor rolling out of Germany, the bearings in the car are still going to have issue.

You caught the rod bearings right in time... Cylinder 6 looks like it was about to blow up your engine!

Any aftermarket main bearings yet? Just wpc treated stock? Anyone measured clearances to see which end of the tight/loose range?

Only VAC has "aftermarket" bearings, which are just an OEM bearing with a coating that adds thickness. There are multiple OEM bearing thicknesses, and when I tried to get out of them which ones they start with they couldn't tell me. When they sell you the bearings they expect that you'll make any necessary adjustments to the crank journal to get to the desired spec. I'd rather buy bearings the right thickness to begin with so that I don't have to cut on the crank. WPC treated mains are the best thing going right now. You can adjust the clearances a little bit by mixing and matching those.

So, in other words, build it like a human (not a robot) would? Lol. Pick and choose the sizes that fit best.

It's so hard to understand why BMW would play the tolerances game with this car on such a fundamental and inexpensive engine component.

Please post a few quick photos and list your mileage.

Thanks!

I'll start:

85,000 miles

Contributing to the list. My 2 front mains went too though. 46k miles.

With only 27K miles on it , your 2013 aluminum bearings look already pretty bad .
Of course we saw worse , but yours having clearly premature wear .
And your pics with only 27K miles show how bad the S65 bearings actually are ...your bearings show the wave patern wear , this means your bearings got vibrations .
Most owners think the aluminum bearings are better , but no it's no good !

Thanks for the feedback. I completely agree. The aluminum bearings from the later e92s don’t seem much better at all. I’m happy I got it done now instead of waiting

I'm curious and I apologise if this has been addressed before. Why the stripes on the Aluminum worn bearings? Is it a cavitation? Piston ignition pulses? Design artifact of the bearing?

Oil grooves by design to flush out contaminants since the Alu bearings are hard and less embeddable
