Cheapest/SAFEST way to remove unwanted creatures

in our Chimey. Im hearing all sorts of ruckus during the day. They are quiet at night and loud in the morning. Im not sure if its bats, birds, squirels, coons...not a clue just know theres a few of them and I dont want to start a fire and smoke them out, we also dont want to have to pay someone to remove them. ANY IDEAS?

plus, if creature is dumb enough, it might get dizzy by the smoke and fall into your fire. Then you have some serious shit to take care of.

Maybe a firework?

Call local animal control (paid for by town or city). They may have some suggestions and/or may come out for free.

Okay, then just cover the top of your chimney so they can't get out; new ones won't come in. Open the flue and put critter food in your fireplace: acorns, dried corn, bat food, whatever. You can do this once a day, and they'll probably never bother you, because once they're full and done, they'll go back up the chimney. After a happy life of critter cuisine, they'll eventually die and fall down on their own.
