Replaced one rear OEM tire - question
Morning Gents - I got a nail in my right (passenger)rear tire the other day. Too close to the sidewall, so was not able to be patched. Luckily, I had the tire insurance, and it paid to have the PS2 replaced.
The question is this. The two rears each had ~ 5K miles on them, and both had ~ 5/32 of tread left. The new tire has ~ 8/32 of tread. perhaps it is my imagination, but after picking up the car last night (and verifying that my tire pressure is where I always have it), the car now has a tendency to fade right....not a hard pull, but more like it tracks that way slowly. It never did that before. Could the 3/32 difference in the tread on the drivers rear be such that it is causing this? If so, I imagine/hope that once the new tire scrubs in a bit, that this will go away? Or, could it be coincidence that my alignment went awry at the same time? thanks for the suggestions |

Assuming the wear bars are at 2/32”, then your old rears are about 50% worn, which seems about normal at 5K miles. Many tire makers always recommend replacing both rears in this case, especially on cars with limited slip differentials. Of course, they are also in the business of selling tires. Probably worth asking the dealer, just to avoid any potential warranty issue. It is possible you are feeling some effect of the tread difference, but I would give it at least enough mileage to wear off the release agent from the new tire, which might make a difference.

Thanks gents...It's not horrible, so i'll def give it a week or so of some spirited driving to see if that resolves it. Stupid question, what is an Limited Slip Differential, and how do I know if my car has it? 2011 M3 vert Happy Holidays

All M3s have limited slip; might be worth asking your dealer or a reputable independent tech.

Get it shaved down to 5/32 by a race tire shop or replace the other one... new tire is 9-10/32 and the old tire is 5/32, meaning 40% tread left (worn is 2/32) vs. 100%. Strange wear will definitely contribute to a pull.

Nice that it worked out so both tires are covered by warranty. And now we know the answer to SehrSchnell's question: 'Why would you drive over a nail?' http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=629961
