You'll get it. I'm sticking to FL Studios. Just about got it mastered.

Kinda-sorta. Logic and Ableton. Can't stand fucking Ableton's interface, but for djing and making mixes it's the only option... beside Serato, of course, but its a different purpose...

Yeah Logic is like the software everyone is slowly but surely shifting over to. I used it for a little before, I kinda like it. Not enough to totally switch over, though.

FL Studio is so... restricting. Seriously give ableton /logic a serious go. The learning curve is super steep, but shit... the thing you can accomplish with it will blow your mind.

FL Studio is like Garage Band. Very limited options

There are a ton of tutorials available for Logic, but it does have a steep learning curve.
Once you get the basics, you will get the grip of everything else

Yeah I know. Been using it for about 8 years now.. started from the very beginning. And that journey has been a bitch lol.

I made beats with Logic for a good 5-6 months when I made beats with my music production partner (he's a dumbass, so we went our separate ways), and I was very impressed by it. The quantization is the best I've experienced with any software, and the interface is dope.. but for the results netted from that I can achieve the same with FL9; its all in how you are able to use filters and the sound packs you get.

Just listen to the shit in my sig (I know you have lol); when I tell people I use FL to make that they're like WTF.

Also, this is probably the best producer I know, hands down. Makes all his shit originally. Got a lot of my influence/technique from him:

www.anom-music.com

All done in FL Studios. Shit is nuts.

I'm trying to learn Logic and know ableton pretty well. Logic's automation sucks so bad compared to ableton's. It is a very deep program though and will take countless hours of studying every menu command to call yourself a pro in it.

Are you guys taking courses or using books? Or just online tutorials?

Also mastering is just another skill on its own

For me its other way around. I hate how it works in Ableton. Shit, I hate everything about Ableton. It drives me crazy that you can't lock X number of tracks together and move them independently from the rest of the stuff. Instead you have to select them and move them. And this single window layout seems totally inefficient to me, since you really have too much stuff going on. Also zooming in and out is rather stupid. I want a keyboard shortcut for that, not dragging my mouse up and down.

For Logic automation look here:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep0.../logictech.htm

Did not take a class per se, but did spend 3 days in Moulton Studios with Chris Lum working on a track couple of years ago. I just wanted to see the process of making a track from the beginning to the end. He did most of the stuff, since I did not know my way around Logic back then, but I learned a lot. Unfortunately I am yet to use that knowledge....

you can select multiple tracks and move them by using the shift key. Zooming in and out shortcut is the "-" and "+" key on the keyboard, but i agree with you on the other things.

I signed up for Mike Koglin's trance class in logic but backed out cuz it was too expensive. Think I'm gonna sign up again though.

Hmm... +/- does not do shit for me... Just tried again on Mac mini and MBP.

Multiple selection works if i hold Shift and drag from the beginning of the Track A to the end of Track B if i want to move A and B, but I can't hold shift and click on each track to add it to selection. Also when I drag shift, I end up having to zoom out so i can see the entire area that i need to select and that makes selection starting from the very beginning of a track nearly impossible.

I haven't made beats in awhile. I sometimes randomly stumble upon a remix i've done way back and laugh about it.

Was using FL Studio and Reason.

well if you hit the minus key it zooms out, to zoom in you gotta do shift and equal sign (pretty stupid). Also when holding shift, click on the title of the track not the waveform. That way it selects the whole track

Edit. A lot of producers use ableton (Deadmau5 Dada life etc) so there must be something appealing. I'd say it is a lot easier than logic.

One thing I love about ableton is that if you click on parameter in the filters, the automation is shown on the track. For logic you gotta go through a guessing game to figure out which one lets say a cutoff is in order to pull up the automation data.
