The uncomfortable question..

I'm thinking of buying a used M3 E92 and I have the following questions:

-How much info can a BMW Dealer get when they connect the key to its computer.

-Is it possible to tamper/modify the odometer? and how difficult is it? and how to look for clues if this has been done.

Many thanks.

#1 Mileage, VIN, Model, Service Records, etc..
#2 Check Carfax for accurate odometer readings. Does current owner have all service records? That would help.

If you have suspicions about odometer reading. I'd pass. Also, dealer has to provide you with an odometer statement - falsifying is a big liability for them...not to say it can't be done though. Why the suspicion?

I hope I've revised your question incorrectly....

Rolling back the ODO on a modern engine is nearly impossible. They aren't like the old mechanical drives of years ago that was a gear driven by the transmission that in turn drove a series of gears inside the cluster. The ECM uses sensors these days and angular rotations are converted to distances, all digitally. The portion of the ECM that houses mileage is pretty locked down. Not saying its impossible, but you really have to know the ECM inside and out to accomplish this.
