Interesting. BMW are changing the map data supplier from Navteq to Tele atlas.

A UK member has a US spec car and simply uses a European nav disc. See no reason why you can't do the same with an '09 M3

Well, there won't be a NAV disc in the 09 m3. I'm sure that the european dealers will have an update available that can be downloaded into the car in order to give european maps, etc.

With an HD, it seems like they could either just have the whole world on there to begin with, or it could download as needed based on your GPS location. Seems like the latter would make a lot of sense either way, so it can add/change roads and geography as needed. Granted, that would take more storage, but storage is cheap. Not sure how much of the 80GB that would end up using over-all though. But I'm pretty sure they limit how much you can use for music and contacts to begin with.

According to BMW, the navigation map can be updated by your BMW center OR by loading a update disc in the DVD drive yourself.

Cool. So does it erase any prior map data you have, or does it just append it, taking up more of the HD (and forcing you to reload the other later, if you return to that continent {or whatever})?

Don't know my friend. We'll know soon enough though ... but it will allow Tele Atlas (new map data supplier) a way to make money out of us all ... just like NavTeq did in the past !

The European Delivery section of bmwusa.com is already updated stating that they will load maps of Europe to the hard drives of 1 and 3 series cars for MY09 while in Europe, so I assume you should be able to get them downloaded at a dealership in Germany.

Yes, it hasn't been officially confirmed to the public, but it's pretty much a sure thing based on recent CA training documents, etc.

As I mentioned, I know the GM of a local BMW dealership. Yesterday, I asked him about the upgraded iDrive for the 2009 E92 M3.

"Not until March 09." According to him, it will be introduced as a 2009.5 model in the M3.

I'm thinking something a little different. If my GM friend is right...I'm thinking I won the bet since it won't be out until a 2009.5 model.

Wait, I am completely confused. Why did you include me here? We never completed the bet, remember? We could not agree on terms.

PencilGeek, I'm curious as to what your GM friend shared with you. Come on, keep things interesting and spill the beans!

Some more anecdotal evidence, but thought I'd share. See the following thread. The interesting part starts on posts 7 and 8 at the end.

All-new 7 series will get an enhanced version
All other models receive the new iDrive in 2009 "

Ok I think that was a reply to me, even though you quoted south - twice.

I hear you. Of course, if I were TLud, I would have been sure to clarify and stress that MY2009 includes any car with a MY2009 VIN. But then I suppose you would not have agreed to that anyway.

Once again(), all other models in 2009, the 3 series now. IMO that's the only way to understand that quotes. Do you hear me now?

My guess is that at a minimum, all M3s (E90, E92, or E93) will have the new iDrive from October production forward. My logic for that is based on the fact that the new '6NF Smartphone Integration' option is available from October production forward and I would assume that it requires a specific codeline in iDrive to handle it. I don't see why they would add that codeline to the old iDrive that is being phased out. I would think it's specifically tied to the new iDrive's software, thus, if 6NF is available from October forward, the new iDrive will be in all cars that can be ordered with 6NF.

And I know the M3 (at least E90 variant) can be ordered with 6NF as I just changed my order to include it this morning and have received a copy of the updated Vehicle Inquiry Report from my CA that lists it along with my production number and confirmed order status. I haven't called BMW NA to see when my new production date is as I assume it won't be available until tomorrow after some kind of overnight batch processing takes place within CenterNet (BMW ordering system). I will update once I get the new production date.

Apples and oranges. He's buying an E93. I haven't been ambiguous in the slightest...I've only said E92 M3. That thread isn't even M3 -- it's 335. I have no bets on 335, E93 or otherwise.
Agreed, the bet clearly concerns the E92 M3. Again, just anecdotal evidence.

I could see the M being on a different time schedule than other 3 series, but we'll see how this plays out.
