Sorry to bring a old tread back up, how far in should the rear caliper rear pin sit, right in so its flush or is a few mm sticking out OK

The flat head that you're tapping with the hammer should be fairly flush on the back side. You should see that pencil tip poking out of the small hole by a 1-2 mm.

I don't tap the pin with a hammer directly. That's pretty much impossible. I hold a small socket tool against the pin's flat head and tap the hammer on the socket (see pic). That 1/4" hex size is good for the head of the pin and it's just long enough for me to hold with my fingers and not get hit with the hammer. And it's just short enough that there's room to get some momentum with the hammer.

I never did try the pliers trick. I may try that someday.

Great thanks. I actually tried that but just couldn't get enough power into the hammer to knock the pin further in. I'll give it another try though

Used a smaller Allen key and it worked😁

Also, don't try to hit it with the normal head of the hammer. Turn the hammer 90º and hit the socket, or allen key or whatever you use with the flat side of the hammer. You'll get more room to build momentum.
