Break-in Period
I bought on Monday 01/02/12 a new M3 Coupe with a manual with 30 miles on it. I did not read the breakin period. I put the car up slowly to 135 for about 15 seconds and then back down. The RPM's were about 5700.
I drove from Dallas to Houston and put 350 miles on it, changing speeds all the time. Keeping around 70 -80 mph with an occasional 105ish mph. I think i redlined it or close, maybe twice for about 2 seconds with 400 miles on it. I have touched 6500 to 7000 several times for the same 2 seconds when shifting. Do you think I hurt the engine? I am babying it now, making sure to keep between 5500 and 6000 max on an occasional shift. Do you think I have hurt the engine? M3 Red |

Did you go WOT?
I'm playing the safe side, my car hasn't seen 5k yet, throttle hasn't seen 50% and not unnecessary jerks. I plan to dyno my car after break-in just to get a baseline. I would be a good idea if different people with different break in techniques would dyno their car just to get some sort of comparative database going. |

Nope
I have not gone WOT, it was just a kiss close to redline for 2 seconds and then i shifted. I just read the break-in period thing last night and kinda freaked me out. I was wondering if BMW will know that i went 135 when i take it in for the 1200 check and say something like, your warranty is voided....that would piss me off big time.

I learned how to drive fast at 16, drove a 1969 Roadrunner 383 4bl at 145 and it was still going faster. I could see the gas gauge move. I have been hooked on speed ever since. BMWM3RED |

Break in period is recomended not a requirement. If BMW would void your warranty then they should have limited the redline to 5,500 during the first 1200 miles. In your argument you can say that it was a matter of life and death ... you were trying to outrun a rouge helicopter shooting a machine gun at you .
I am not saying BMW cannot see what you did to your car, after all there is a data logger (blackbox) that stores all sorts of information. However I think it only records last couple of minutes before airbag deployment or something like that. When BMW puts in my key into their key reader, then know every code that the car stored, kms, fuild level/condition, etc. Don't worry about the warranty |

I drive all highway miles, 80+ for work so, it is not really drive hard except when I kiss the higher rpms. But i am mindful about the sound it makes in the higher range and i know when to shift. Dont tell anyone, but I can drive like a bat outta hell. i have out run the cops 3 times.....I know, I know....stupid. But they were slow and i was not... |

I want to take the M3 to a track after the break-in and see what the M3/I can do. Have you heard of Hennessy? I know him personally and he has a track in Sealy Texas. He makes the Venom GT...awesome car. |

Hilarious.
Guy buys an M3 and reads about the break in after driving the car hard. Admits to running from cops. Sharp like boiled hot dog. |

I think i'm a sadist because i'm keeping it under 5k until 1200mi even though i'm sure it likely will make no difference while I own the car. The anticipation is like foreplay
even worse, my personalized plates just came... "8400 RPM"
