I've been watching these threads with great interest and firstly I'd like to say thanks to all you guys who are putting in the effort to be able to swap the 08 iDrive for the 09 iDrive.

If this gets figured out I'm in for the upgrade even if I have to drive halfway across the country to do it. Sounds insane I know, but that new iDrive is haunting me lol.

technic, you rock. idrive 08 really sucks donkey balls.Everytime I think about it, I'm amazed that in the year 2008 such a shitty system was produced. How can this be version 3.0? How bad was 1.0 and 2.0?

Anyways, how much do you guestimate the total upgrade will cost after selling off idrive 08 parts to cover some of the costs

I don't know if we will be able to sell the old iDrive parts after this retrofit - and that is if this retrofit works the way I want it to work.

It could be very possible that we will need to keep the old iDrive parts just in case the installation of the new iDrive parts does not allow any software update in the car. The way the BMW software update works is by checking all the P/N of the Vehicle Order and making sure that all the modules are compatible with the updates to be received. If a module is found with a different P/N from the expected list/database the update will not be done.

I don't want to change my Vehicle Order to include a '09 part in a '08 M3, that could screw something else up because the opposite is also true: adding a part that was not part of any '08 Vehicle Order could also make any software update to not load or load with incongruencies. What I want is to be able to switch back and forth iDrives depending if a sofware update needs to be performed by the dealer without changing the VO.

Again, the bad news is that I will have to buy all these parts to really find out if the way I want this retrofit to work is possible at all.

After reading this thread, what I understand is that swapping the 08 buttons/knobs for the 09 one w/the console isn't the problem, its the compatibility of the software with the CIC? Please explain if I am mistaken.

I really want to upgrade the CCC for the CIC and I am ready to take the financial plunge. So Technic , any updates? Does the CIC work in the 08 M3?

The CIC requires a two step programming/coding process to install in a 2008:

1) program the CIC to the car to recognize the vehicle model and all its options. This step configures the CIC to "talk" and control all the vehicle's options and service/maintenance data. Once this is done the unit will function like it actually came with the car from factory, with one exception:

2) load three files named FSC enabling codes to "turn on"/enable the Navigation system and the Voice Control.

No BMW dealer is able to perform step #1 with their ISTA/P system, and step #2 requires that step #1 is done first at the dealer. The reason of this is that for ISTA/P to code the CIC in a 2008 it requires that the CIC/HD screen/controller be part of the Vehicle Order, which BMW will not change as it could create software incompatibilities in other modules at the time of any software update. That's an automatic warranty void for the whole electrical system in the car, not only for the iDrive. I explained this issue in previous posts.

However, step #1 can be performed by either the software tools named NCS Expert or possibly by Autologic. I know of a couple of guys that have used NCS Expert and have done successfully step #1. I will be trying the Autologic route soon. I don't know where to find NCS Expert (it is an "Internet underground" software) and all the hardware parts required for the interface to the car, so don't ask me please... that's the reason that I'm choosing Autologic for my retrofit.

Either software tool is capable of programming the CIC in particular without any other module being programmed, and much less any Vehicle Order being changed. The only requirement for this to work is to have the car be updated with the latest code before the installation of the CIC. I did that and it seems that the CIC works much better with my Assist and Bluetooth, even without any programming yet.

One way of not requiring any CIC programming is to be lucky enough and get a CIC from a vehicle configured exactly like yours. That takes care of step #1 in one shot without any programming required. That will get the CIC to be ready for step #2.

Unfortunately, for step #2 BMW is not generating any FSC for non-2009 vehicles. In other words, BMW will not give you any FSC if your car did not come with a CIC from factory. And the worst is that, even if you can get the FSC codes somehow, somewhere, nobody so far has been able (or willing) to describe how to load those three files into the CIC. The BMW dealer will not be able to load them with ISTA/P as -stated above- that requires a Vehicle Order change and NCS Expert does not load any files only codes.

The last resort is again Autologic, and they are working on a solution... if possible.

Any other ideas or solutions will be welcome.

Assist/Bluetooth fully functional:

Notes for installation:

- CIC plugs right into the CCC Quadralock connector, Radio and GPS antenna.
- HD Screen installs -and uses same screws- in the dash as non-HD Screen. HD Screen requires new video cable and new Power/CAN connector, though:

HD Screen (CIC) on the left, non-HD Screen (CCC) on the right:

HD Screen video cable jack (round, 4 wires), Power/CAN jack (rectangular, pins #1-8 in a single row):

non-HD Screen video cable jack (rectangular, 8-wires):

non-HD Screen Power/CAN jack (rectangular, pins #1-12 in double rows):

The good news is that the Power/CAN wires (4 wires total) are exactly the same between the two different connectors, and they are located in exactly the same pin slots in both connectors (1, 3, 5 and 6).

The slot numbers are molded in the connectors and inside the connector jack (with the male pins) on each screen.

So it is a matter of getting the new connector with the used HD Screen (if possible) and removing the wires on by one from the existing double row connector and inserting each wire in exactly the respective slot in the new single row connector -wire in slot #1 from double row goes in slot #1 in single row connector, and so on.

Old, double row connector:

New, single row connector (bottom of photo, with USB port, USB cable and old double row connector with locking sleeve):

If you cannot get that single row connector with your used HD Screen (most junkers sell the HD Screen with the connector and the wires cut) then a shitty solution -until you can get the proper connector, no P/N is available yet- could be either wrapping each pin with electrical tape or with shrink tubing and just plug each female jack into their respective male pins of the HD Screen (again, 1 to 1, 3 to 3, 5 to 5, and 6 to 6):

The elusive USB cable (no P/N is available so far):

The video cable looks exactly the same as the USB cable but without that built-in circuitry/filter bump shown with the velcro wrapper above.

USB mount in glovebox is already made, just covered with a plastic plug...

... just pry it out:

And insert the USB port (no need to remove glovebox, just "fish" the cable from the CIC area before installing it):

All connectors are color coded except the Power/CAN connector...

The only P/N that has not changed is the HD Screen cable, 61119185171 and the shifter console (6MT and M-DCT). The USB cable P/N is unknown and the rest of the P/N (CIC, HD Screen, controller) have changed several times so it is not that easy to pin point which part to buy.

Just try to buy the latest P/N possible based on the latest dealer database. If anything, try to get any P/N from 03/09-on... but remember, this is not a done retrofit.

- CIC was coded to my car last January, so all the particular screens and features of my M3 (MDM, climate control, service information and all audio options) work like the CIC came from factory. That was the first programming part and can be done at any Autologic shop.

- The Nav and the Voice Control still are not activated, however I should have an update by the end of the month once an experiment being currently in development is finished.

I tested an eBay-bought D-CAN cable with my M3 and it worked in communicating with my car -even "talking" directly with the CIC- and for diagnostics.

However and unfortunately, I will not be posting or answering any questions about the details of this interface as this is a quite dangerous software tool if the user does not know anything about how this works. You are on your own.

The purpose of this post is to confirm that the cable works with E9x from 03/07 production and it is being sold at eBay for just $99.

Man, you're nuts... in a good way . How much did you end up paying for all that crap? I actually like my '08 iDrive better, but obviously I don't care having a full screen video, reverse camera (have PDC), a HDD (a USB stick -and the CD slot- is enough for me), or voice recognition (in case it's better). My question for you, since you're intimately familiar with both iDrives, is this:
What are the differences (other than interface with more buttons -which I don't like) between the 2? I drove a couple of M3s with the newer iDrive and all menus and options seemed to be there. Only difference I learned a few weeks ago was that '09 iDrive has a night mode, and '08 doesn't (at least I couldn't find it ), but don't care about that either. Anything else? Thx.
