Sumitomo HTR Z III - Anybody tried em?
They're sooo cheap in the 18" size, curious any opinions. Got great reviews on TR.

I have not seen a review yet but if you decide to get some go to a "Big o Tire" Francaise, that is their mother brand and they can get you the lowest price!

There's a reason why - please don't put these on your M3.

Not sure about the Sumitomo's.
The General Exclaim UHPs are a great tire for the price. They won't give you PS2 level of performance but work great for everyday use. Not sure if the UHPs are available in the required sizes though.

+1 on the generals... many ppl complain bout them not giving enough performance. but if you have a separate set of tires and wheels for the track or any spirited drives and just want tires for commuting, use the generals.

I think the Sumitomo HTR Z III is likely a superb tire based on the reviews and tests conducted by TR. I would not hesitate to get them if they are available in the sizes you want. Expensive does not always mean better. A lot of the expensive Pirelli tires are nowhere as good as cheaper Bridgestone or Yokohama tires. Michelin PS2 are great but are overpriced (more expensive than any of the competing tires). Most good max performance tires have limits beyond the average driver anyhow.

I dont know, I had the UHP's on a ZHP and they're an all season perf. tire and sure felt like all season. I did do a track day (or should I say tried) and it was a joke. They felt like snow tires!

I am changing out to some Dunlop Direzza Z1 Sport Star Specs just to try them out since I've heard a lot of good things. But I wouldn't hesitate to go back to the Generals.

As evidenced by the above posts, perspective is everything when talking about tire performance. For someone who has been driving on a true all-season tire, the Exclaim UHP is great. (The UHP is branded with M&S because it meets the DOT requirements regarding tread pattern for an M&S tire, but does not have a compound that works in winter)
For someone who has been on something like the Michelin PS2, the Excaim UHP feels a bit mushy in the sidewall and not especially sticky, but these differences tend only to be noticeable when pushing the car harder. The PS2 that came on the M3 are one of the best street tires in the world today. Most other tires will be a step down. Some comments about the Sumitomos: The Sumitomo's were a pleasant surprise to me when we tested them on the track. They competed very strongly with some of the top offering from Bridgestone and Continental in the test that we did. They would be a step down from the Michelins, but not as big a step as some might expect. Here is a test of the Sumitomos: http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AW8&...ay.jsp?ttid=93 A note about Pirelli: Pirelli has made some outstanding tires over the years, and also some that were not as impressive. Almost all Pirellis deliver excellent steering feel and response.. The new Pirelli P Zero (no Rosso, no Nero, jst P-Zero) is an exceptionally good performance tire. It would be hard to find a better combination of wet and dry traction in a street tire. This is one of the few tires that can compete on an equal footing with the PS2. Here is the test we did on the P-Zero http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AW8&...ay.jsp?ttid=98

That's an all season tire though. Not in the same class as the Sumitomo HTRZ III, Bridgestone RE050 PP, PS2, etc...

If you want the most performance for the money, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric is a very good deal in the stock 18" sizes right now. Those equal or exceed the PS2 in grip, though not quite as nice a "feel" as the PS2. The Yokohama Advan Sport has a very nice feel and ride, but not as much grip as the PS2. The Bridgestones are a very good competitor as well, but the RE050A Pole Position does not come in the stock 18" sizes.

It all depends on how you drive your car.
If you are strictly a city/commute driver and do no twisties, tracking, etc., there is no reason not to go with the Sumitomo. However, if you are thinking of heading to the track, etc., spend the extra cash and get a good tire. Like others have said, the PS2 is about the best street tire you can get. There is a reason they are OE on M3's. Over the years, I have tried many tires on my E36 M3's. Kumho MX, Sumi HTRZ II, Yoko AVS Sport, etc, etc. Nothing really compares to the PS2 in terms of grip AND sidewall stiffness. I do track, and have for years...I am sticking with PS2's. Again, no need to stick with a tire like the PS2 if you simply drive the car from point A to point B. But if you push the envelope once in a while, buy a tire suited for it.

What about the Continential and the Dunlop offerings vs the PS2 and ones you've already mentioned?

Dunlop does not have any matching sets in the stock M3 sizes. Is there a particular Dunlop you were asking about?

Have Conti's ordered and on 19" OEM wheels being shipped as we speak. Am not a track guy and do spirited driving in the NE (DC/MD/VA) area so I wanted an idea as to what kinda alternative to my OEM PS2 I was getting. Looked on your side and recon'd the reviews and ended up sort of confused but in the end think my choice was as educated as I would get without asking somebody to just pick the tires for me!
Will use my 18" OEM wheels for winter tires however am unsure as to whether to go full winter tires on them or All Season as an option. Am considering that I will have just the remainder of this winter season and next winter driving on the 18" tires until the job will move me to Texas in 2010 so am not sure IF it makes sense to spend alot of cash on a full winter tire which I won't use again until 2012 at least when I move again (am military). So would be interested in your thoughts and recs Ben and fellow forum members?
