Measuring oil level changes with Carly app
Hi guys,
it seems like the Carly for BMW app engine parameter ("engine oil raw level"), actually provide more information to our oil gauge: Before a recent oil change it showed 32.64 (gauge said Max). After change it said 31.46, gauge was in the middle. Added 0.25 liter where after the app now says 32.94, the gauge is back on Max. (I did a first 0.25 liter top up which I unfortuntaley didn't remember to measure). Not only does it seem to more precisely indicate oil level changes, but it also shows it pretty immediately i.e. before the gauge eventually decide to wake up. Would be interesting to hear if anyone else played around with this Carly parameter, and if so what values you have measured? Thanks PS. Been trying to search down what sensor it actually measure incl asked Carly but nothing yet. Any insight here also appreciated. |

Bumping this for additional reference input on oil level measure with Carly. Would be nice to if possible "validate" this as a tool given the poor accuracy of the onboard oil gauge.

interested as well. I'm sure we could figure out a more accurate estimate of oil level if we knew the parameter range

I'm curious because it would be nice to not have to start the car and run it in the garage for 15-20 to verify after an oil change. Knowing how many liters actually fills it is good here too haha.

Checked this morning and yes the app show this value straight away on start. During my previous oil round it sat at the same (32.64) value all the way thought the 5k miles. Not that I notice any oil consumption but surely it should drop at least a tad? Still, the value clearly change immediately when adding oil.
Great if some more folks with the app can measure in order to if possible start draw some conclusions. Also again, great if someone have inputs on what this sensor actually is. I believe the Carly guys doesn't have details per engine really but "simply" pull all sensors available. Cheers |

I have the app as well and decided to monitor oil yesterday. My oil level is at the OK mark, not Max, and mine also shows 32.64

Cheers Marc. You're car consume any oil at all? If so it would be interesting to get another round once she have eaten a bit according to the gauge.

Not really. I had to fill with an extra quart once but that was it. I've only done like 2 oil changes on this car so far though.

Got a reading..
The gauge shows max. Carly reads 32.64. Took a reading before starting the engine (cold) and once oil was at operating temp and there was no difference. I think we need to see some numbers during an oil change.

Hi Marc, JD, so apparently the 32.64 value indicate proper/max fill (althought I'm at 32.94 still within OK/max, maybe on the edge?).
Would be interesting if some folks with the gauge for instance at half could chime in with some values. Ps. Marc btw, did you notice there is another engine temp option? Believe this measure actual oil temp while above "motor temp" show coolant. |

I didn't Helmsman. I never really looked into the other parameters before. Thanks for the tip though

Thanks Msan. So seems like correlation between cars here and possibly meaning this Carly parameter could be helpful. So far we seems to have:
Oil gauge : Carly Max : 32.64-32.94 Above mid : 32.05 Mid : 31.45 Carly seems to be more sensitive/changing value before the gauge does which is helpful when changing/topping oil, and the fact that it show value immediately instead of waiting I also think is nice. Let's see if we can get a few more inputs PS. Would be really interesting to see if Carly measure consumption with sooner indication than the gauge. Mu Carly value have sat still on same value between changes, gauge indicates no consumtion, changing with 5K miles interval so maybe have very llimited burn. Cheers Vsix, so seems to boil down to 32.05-32.9 ish equal to full. Quite a large span still. Lets continue to collect values and see where it ends up.
