Help curing exhaust resonance

I have an evolve automotive rs full exhaust system on my car and it sounds truly awesome, however I am suffering with all I can describe as bad resonance/drone at the 1800 - 2200 rpm range, to such a degree that any long trips result in a dull headache at the end of the journey. I can't be he only one suffering with this, so what have other people done to cure it? I was wondering if extra sound proofing in the boot/ trunk of the car in the form of dynamat might help? If I can just get this problem sorted it will be the ideal exhaust. Or is there some way of tuning the exhaust to cure the resonance?

You might want to look into intalling a resonator.

you can just change your speed when cruising, a couple MPH above or below what you're driving should fix it maybe.

I never drive in that range personally, even on very long trips. I don't think you'll find any full exhaust that doesn't have some noise in that range. You really don't have many options because of where things are located on the evolve - which are all the most effective places. There really is no room to add another set of resonators. Honestly, that range is so low, that they probably would not help even if you could get them on.

My advice is to stay above 2200. If that is your only complaint with the exhaust, then you are ahead of the game for sure : )

I guess it must be peculiar to the m3 as I have had full exhausts with race cats or no cats on my last few cars - supra twin turbo, Audi s4 & rs6 with no hint of drone or resonance. It just seems a shame as it spoils the driving experience a bit.

Some exhausts have the drone and others do not.

the Performance Exhaust is good at avoiding this problem.

Looks for exhausts featuring Helmholtz chambers as these are good at handling drone.

You need to do a better job choosing an exhaust next time man . I don't put up with drone anymore; rather stay stock. You need an exhaust system with anti-resonance chambers, like BMW performance, Dinan, Corsa (UUC), and AA. Also keep in mind not all chambers are as effective, since some AA owners still report heavy drone at certain rpm. But they're definintely better than nothing, as the rpm range is greatly diminished. Sell/trade your system and buy one more suited to your needs . Good luck.

He has a full exhaust and it does have resonance chambers and resonators. I severely doubt any of those rear sections will eliminate the drone in that range on a full exhaust.

Well I have found out what the problem was, one of the back boxes was really close to the heat shield and it must have caused the resonance, a quick reshape and it us much better.

My Remus sport has minimal drone between 1800-2000 rpm. Otherwise, it sounds awesome.

Hi i just installed the eisenmann race exhaust muffler only and the inside cabin noise is so loud at 2-3k rpms. Anyone has done something to reduce this inside noise?

I've come to terms with drone and cabin resonance. The key here is to realize when to expect the drone at the known rpm range it creeps out of and simply drive pass it or change gears; in my case, drive it harder.

i though the evolve has electronic valves... so by going into quiet mod you should kill all the drone. one more thing you actually drive the car at 1800-2200 range ?????

I cannot imagine driving at 1800-2200 rpms. That's practically lugging the engine, isn't it?

I have the Eisenmann Race now, and it drones, but for me it's really limited to a range of 2800-3200 RPM, and if I go just a touch over or under that range, it subsides substantially. Unfortunately my habit from my previous car was to cruise a lot in that range. I find I am shifting around so I can avoid cruising in that range. Since it's not my DD, I'm coping fine for now. And the sound otherwise is so marvelous!

One thing I've noticed is that the M Performance Exhaust (which I had on my previous car and my friend has on her car now) and the OEM stock exhaust exhibit a harmonic resonance in that same range, but the hum is so quiet most people don't even notice it and one can't really call it "drone". In this sense, the MPE is a big winner in my book (and I love the sound at WOT).

Yeah, the MPE is a good compromise for those who don't have any tolerance for drone. It's family friendly if you stay out of it but has a wicked wail when you flog it. While is not always the exhaust you want its never the exhaust you don't.

Resonance/drone has to do with the exhaust's design itself. Sound proofing might help reduce what you get into the cabin but IMHO it's only a band-aid solution and will never completely get rid of it. Get a high end setup from people who've been building exhausts for decades and you won't have such issues. No problem with my Supersprint

from my experience with Eisenmann Race, its tough to cut the drone. But man that system sounds good haha.
