Changing Spark Plugs

The service manual says to change the spark plugs in the E9X M3 every 37,000 miles. This seems overly excessive, especially in this day and age of modern engines. Most cars require spark plug changes after 100,000 miles. I know the 4.0 liter V8 is a high strung engine, but is it really necessary to change the plugs so often? Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, it is necessary. A google search will tell you why.

These engines eat spark plugs. I think 20k is not too early.

Stick with what the manual says or even more frequent if you like.

Yeah I thought it was crazy at first too. I had my replaced at 30,000 and was rather shocked at seeing how quick these motors require spark plug changes.

What should we change our spark plugs to besides OEM?

I don't think there is an aftermarket OEM. In fact NGK is a lot cheaper than the same plugs branded by BMW. You are just paying for the BMW name when you can buy the NGK ones for a lot cheaper. There are some great retailers in the US where I got mine from ... shipped to Australia cost me half the price compared to buying it locally through the dealer.

I think that the short interval is related to the DME using them as ion knock sensors.
