In-car Video of Borla Prototype Exhaust for E9X M3

Hi Guys,

I have a prototype of the new Borla E92/E90 M3 exhaust on my personal car. Those of you that might not be familar with my relationship with Borla, I'm the guy that got them to make the E46 M3 midpipe (part #60090) back in 2006. They used my old E46 M3 for R&D for both the original version and the new V2. IMO that is and has been the best sounding, most cost effective option for eliminating rasp on the E46 M3 and we have sold hundreds of them. So, when the opportunity presented itself to test the new E92/E90 M3 exhaust I jumped at the opportunity.

I promised not to devulge specific info I know about the design, but I can tell you a few of the important features:
  1. It is a complete bolt-on system with NO cutting or welding required
  2. It is a moderate volume exhaust
  3. It has a deep, rich sound
  4. The tips are 3.5" and look perfect on the car, IMO
  5. Like all Borla products, it is 100% T-304 stainless steel, just like all the other high-end exhausts for BMW
  6. It uses 2 smaller mufflers vs. one large tranversely mounted muffler
  7. It will save quite a bit of weight over the stock rear section, which weighs 55 pounds (I weighed it at Borla)

I do not have an exact release date or price yet, but I will post info as soon as it becomes available.

Check out the video here.

Below are some static pics on my car.

Are you on a PC? You might need the Quicktime plug-in. I do 90%+ of my work on a Mac and use a PC just for a few business applications. I'll test it on a PC to see if the link works for me. Works perfectly on a Mac.

They redesigned the on ramp at Arneil Road a couple of years ago and rebuilt the In N Out restaurant. It's one of the nicest one's around and a cool onramp to test your cornering.

No word yet on pricing. Unofficially, maybe 4 weeks. It took months to get the E46 M3 midpipe to market back in 2006. I'm sure this one will be faster. Anyone going to SEMA can see the system in person on Tightie's E92 M3 in the Toyo booth. I arranged a sponsorship for him with Borla.

Video is on YouTube, too.

Hi guys,

I put the video on YouTube, too. Watch the video below if you have problems with the hi-res QuickTime version above.

Will Borla being make one fitment for both coupes and sedans? Not many options right now for sedan owners who actually want an exhaust that fits correctly instead of putting a coupe exhaust on.

Hi Guys,

No, I can't speak for them, but I'm sure there will be specific fitments for both coupe AND sedan. That is how Borla did it with the 335 exhaust and I'm sure you'll have something made specifically for your sedan.

While I was at the Borla R&D I there was an E90 M3 there, too. Amazingly enough, the E90 sedan is shorter than the coupe. If you put a coupe exhaust on a sedan, the tips will stick out 3/4" or more. I personally believe THAT is the reason many manufacturers are making a muffler only system that requires you cut off your stock exhaust. By FORCING you to cut off your muffler, they are alleviating the necessity for the manufacturer to make TWO sets of different length connecting pipes. Theoretically, not providing connecting pipes should reduce the price.

Personally, I'm not willing to cut my stock exhaust.

Those tips, while they do look nice, are awfully close together. I'd be slightly concerned about how easy they are to clean.

Borla questions

Hi,

I'm not sure I can disclose the pipe diameter yet.

Drone is not bad. You can hear the exhaust while cruising, but it's not bad. It's definitely louder than stock in the car. Borla wanted to make sure it didn't fall in the "why bother" category by not making it loud enough. Everyone at the 805 meet (as in area code 805) liked the sound and the looks of the tips.

It hasn't been dynoed yet, but my butt dyno tells me the aFe filter and Borla exhaust make the car quicker.

I'm sure I'll have more info for you after SEMA.

You can easily get a rag between the tips. It'd much harder to clean the brake dust out of a stock BMW wheel than to clean these tips.

Spoke with Borla yesterday...they released full retail pricing of the E92 M3 exhaust at $1475. They also mentioned they will begin working on a sedan fitment option in the beginning of next year. I am glad a few companies still have some idea of how to realistically price your basic catback exhaust system.

They currently have a part number and should have the first systems in about a month.
