Dropping out of warranty: suggestions?
Hey all,
My 09 E92 M3 DCT currently has 45k miles and warranty is ending in September. I'm either considering extending the warranty or dropping out of it. If I drop out of warranty, do you have any suggestions on what I should absolutely check while I still got warranty? Cheers! Dennis |

Given the expense of fixing these cars out of warranty, I'd definitely go CPO

If u plan on keeping the car another 3 years, get the power train warranty. If you shop on the forum it will be under 3k for a 3yr/70k extension. I got that and it gives me peace of mind especially with the DCT.

Odds are in the dealerships favor. If they lost money doing it, wouldn't be much of a business model. Learn to work on the car yourself for easy stuff and save that money for things that come up. You can also do as said above and spend the money for peace of mind.

Find a good SA and bring it in right before warranty expiration. Have them check everything. Point out every little issue and have them addressed. Do your best to convince them it needs new brakes. If there is any vibration when braking, they may be able to replace warped rotors even if they are not technically worn out.

Several have had the AC evaporator replaced (I did, thankfully under warranty). Might be worth complaining that you think the AC is weak, just so they check to see if you have a leak.

i didn't buy that, but had I purchased any warranty, I would have purchased powertrain as well, but the longer one (since I would have kept my car a lot longer than 3 years after original warranty). I feel like I can roll the die that Idrive, windows mechanics, seats, etc won't break. Mostly the engine issues also scares me. But you need the trifecta of "common" issues for the basic powertain warranty to pay off: 1. throttle actuator or coil pack issues 2. idle air control valve issue 3. bent/stuck valve (vanos issues) of course those above or a bad bearing or blown up transmission would make the warranty pay off. IMO those 3 most common ones, can be fixed for cheap in an indy shop, but it's a hassle to buy parts, find shop, etc etc. So not only is it a piece of mind thing, but it also buys hassle-free dealings when something does go wrong. |

Guess it depends how much you've been quoted vs the cost of likely repairs.
My M3 is still under warranty but I'll definitely consider extending if I still have the car when it expires. The BMW extended warranty on my M6 paid for about about £8K GBP worth of work, which made the warranty cost look like an absolute bargain! Most of the expensive problems in something like an M3 are engine and transmission so maybe consider just taking the power-train warranty if the comprehensive cover is expensive. |
