Surrendered Vanity Plates to DMV, but still have the plates!

I thought this is a good story to share with fellow posters. My BMW lease was up so I brought the car into dealer for "lease return"... Taking "Vanity Plates" off that car was an emotional moment... it was like breaking up with a girlfriend. The car looked as good as new, not a single swirl on paint... it has never been through an automatic car wash and only been shampooed-up with a sheepskin glove and polished with "nano-express wax". I was not going to get the next car yet, so the "Vanity Plates" had to be surrendered to DMV. More than anything I hated to let go off, were these unique vanity plates. At DMV, upon surrendering the plates, I was pleasantly surprized to learn that Vanity Plates could be STORED FOR ONE YEAR AT DMV. It is "form-receipt FS 6T" here in NYS...when you store the plates you are given this receipt, which you use later to retrieve the plates, or if you wish to transfer plates to someone else...

That is absolutely right, this was ment to be a "public service" message to BMW owners out there. I discovered this option by chance... "DMV plate storage" is a nice option if one doesnt want to give up his/hers vanity plate...and its free
This thread should be in regional forum, but I thought this dmv option might be available in other states too.

After driving 335i for 3 years, I am naturally getting into an M3. Looking to buy 2008 M3 6MT CF, but there arent many of them out there yet...so I'm waiting and looking for a good deal. In the mean time, the vanity plates are nice and safe at DMV, ready to be put on that M3 as soon as I get one.

335i was a very nice ride, but at 55k miles and out of warranty... I was sooo happy the lease was up, that it was almost "emotional".

+1

I just got this plate for my e46 M3 track car, and I don't ever plan on getting rid of it. I can't see ever not having an M car at any point in my life, so the 1 year deal probably wouldn't be applicable.
