Price of custom paint job?

I recently drove past an e46 in laguna seca blue and i really really want the e92 to be available in this color. I spoke to bmw about the previous custom paint order system they had available outside the individual program, where you could order any bmw in any bmw color even if it said it wasnt available, but he said they no longer do this. How much roughly can someone expect to pay for a custom paint job in the U.S.? could someone do it in this color? and how long would it take? Im just looking for a ballpark estimate.

If you do the custom paint job in the U.S. , I assume the car will already be painted. This is a big no no! Any secondary painting will never be as good as what you get from the factory and if you find a really good shop it will be extremely expensive. The value of your car will immediately drop if you do this.

Anything is possible for the right price, i think it might be better for you to call around your local body shops and ask them for a quote than asking a internet forum. As for price, could be 1K to 10K...but remember you get what you pay for. Ask professionals first before consulting with m3post.com.

Bare minimum for a quality paint job you are looking at $3,000. Even then you sacrifice factory quality and durability. Fifth is right in that it could run upwards of $10,000 for a "closest to factory" job.

Honestly, my family owns a high spec body shop in San Francisco. second biggest shop only to BMW's shop. if I was to estimate teh price of that I would say upwards of 10 to 15k.

You have to keep in mind you need to strip the car to get a FULL paintjob.

you have to remove the engine to paint the compartment, all doors for door jams, remove all contents of trunk for trunk paint. It's a Big ass job and not worth the trouble unless your building a show car taht you are already spending a couple 100k on anyways.

Maybe there are professionals on m3post.com ... what's wrong with asking? Just because you don't know doesn't mean everyone else doesn't.

There is no paint like the original factory coat. This would be a very bad idea. I would just try to order one that way through BMW. Maybe they will start offering any current BMW paint for an additional $2k or whatever it was before.

I recently toured the Regensburg factory where the M3 and most all other 3 series are made. The tour guide made it a point to say you could special order any paint you wanted from the factory. They had an example of a wood grain hood (really ugly), but you can specify color and effects you want. Just get ready to fork over big $$.

1. why someone would repaint a brand new $70k car is beyond me. I think you will ruin resale value.
2. why someone would choose smurf blue.......???

I think that you should get a second opinion on that...

I don't think your dealer knows what he's talking about, unless it's really just a rest of world option. I was at the factory in December and they have a whole team of people who only do the custom paint work. All those cars are sprayed by hand, not by robot, and the tour guide's son is one of those painters. Unless, they've all been layed off in the last 8 weeks, this service should still be available.

Why don't you ask BMW NA? I suppose it's possible that they don't offer it for US cars, but Porsche still offers it and there doesn't seem to be a compelling reason they couldn't offer it for US cars.

Special Order Paint

I have a request to my CA for option code 354 Titanium Silver Metallic on a new M3. I thought this might be possible since it is available on other 3-series made in the same factory. I'll let you know what happens. We have so much conflicting information on this. There is also the confusion created by "BMW individual"

I am just trying to get a currently used BMW color not listed as a standard exterior color on that model.

I don't know if they can just send an M3 through the paint machine with the other 3 series since it has different dimensions.
I don't like the pale blue cast to the Silverstone II and Space Grey is too dark for may taste. I did have a Silver Gray 650i which is slightly lighter (or maybe just more metallic) than Space. Hopefully there will be more color choices for the next model year.

No go

This from the head of military sales:

Subject: 2008-02-14 No special and individual paint finishes for Military Sales

Hi everyone,

Ive been contacted quite often recently with reference to special and / or individual paint finishes - if it is possible to order them. Im aware that we have done so from time to time previously.

However, we are bound by BMW NA and their clear guideline is: strictly NO special and individual paint finishes.

Additionally, what we dont have in the ordering guide is not on offer.

Furthermore, exorbitant delays in terms of production would be implied as the paint finish facilities will need to be refitted for this one particular car. Not to mention additional handling processes and costs for us. And lastly, a price of more than five thousand dollars and no spare parts to help customers in after sales matters are to be named.

Taking all this into consideration with the ultimate NO of BMW NA in mind, we are not offering special and individual paint finishes for our Military Sales customers.

Kind regards,

I think that this special order paint option "no can't do" will be temporary, until full US production is established and BMW can better forecast the demand. The fact is that there is a M3 Individual Program in Europe already, so the special order paint option is easy to offer again here once the USA M3's start rolling smoothly from the factory. And at $2000 a pop, it is very convenient for BMW to just quit doing it...

its not just for the M3. we asked about it last year for a 525ix or a X3. my dealer is reputable and up on things - he said individual or special orders are no longer avail for US cars. he even wanted to order his own 335i special color but couldnt. so its out unless they change policy again, which seems unlikely.

The same was said about Individual in the USA, and still some USA E46 M3's were ordered and delivered Individual. The same happened with Saddle Brown leather in the new X5, and a phone call straight to BMWNA was enough to make it happen.

It seems to me that it takes some really special dealer with some tight contacts in BMWNA to make this possible. That and an extremely serious customer with a nice deposit...

I think you are mistaken... First regarding the E46 M3. Individual was officially offered back then (in a limited capacity), regardless of model. There is a 325xi runninng around my area in Dakar Yellow. I forget specifically when the Program was discontinued. 2005 rings a bell. Individual is no longer available now except on the 7er.

Regarding Saddle Brown Leather on the X5. This thread alludes to the fact that there were multiple orders in the system for Saddle Brown in the new X5. I beleive that it was a Priority 1 Option. This was NOT a special order.

There are no options beyond the standard pallete (and Priority 1) for any US BMWs. I saw the email from Miltitary Sales, I think there is a better chance with them than otherwise.

If you think I am wrong, then show me a car built since they discontinued the Individual program w/ Individual Options. I have presented this same challenge in the past and no one has EVER posted pictures of a US Spec car built since the discontinuation of the program w/ Individaul Options.
