Wow - cracked wheel

I'm washing my car today, finishing up with the wheels as usual, and suddenly I notice something odd. What is that?? Lo and behold, it's a crack in one of the spokes of the BMW 19" wheels. And it isn't from wheel trauma, these are the wheels that came with the M, I haven't hit anything, and there's no other sign of damage

Yikes!! How did that happen / how long has it been there / what have I done in the car since it's been there? Was it there during the fast run down winding country roads last week? Was it there during my last track day??

Anyway, FYI - take a look at your wheels when you have a minute. The dealer is replacing it ("Do you have the tire and wheel warranty?" "No - but doesn't this appear to be a pretty significant manufacturer's defect to you...?" "Good point"), and I'll be happy to put this one behind me.

EDIT:>> These are low-res pics, I wasn't sure of the size limits for image uploads. Have higher-res ones if needed. In the third pic, you can just see how the crack wraps almost all the way around the spoke.

Cheers

That doesn't look good. If you are still under warranty I would take it to the dealer. Assuming there are no obvious bends from blunt trauma they should replace ASAP.

Are you sure thats a crack and not a scratch? from the pic its hard to tell...

OEM forged wheel that cracked without any trauma seems very strange

It isn't a scratch, it wraps most of the way around the spoke. I'm surprised too - my M must have way more power than typical

- looks like you can see the crack on the inside surface in the reflection of the other spoke. Definitely get your car to the dealer and get this issue addressed ASAP! Do you have another set of wheels you can install on the car?

I'm not driving it, it's parked in the garage. On Monday will make the 8 mile drive to the dealership (slowly...)

Glad to hear the dealership is only 8 miles away - I doubt the crack will reach its critical crack length driving slowly for eight miles...great find - the crack, that is - and good luck with the dealership!

And can still crack/bend like cast wheels. Been through over 50 different sets of cast and forged wheels and forged crack and fracture just like other wheels.

OP needs to get this replaced.

More than likely a defect right? I would assume that hitting a pothole or something else would cause the tire to blow before a wheel would crack.

Must be an isolate manufacturing defect. Internal material stresses? :dunno:

That's what I'm guessing too; a void or something in the spoke. It's now at the dealer after rolling there (slowly...) under its own power, with a new wheel arriving tomorrow.
