new to bay area.... speeding?

Hey,

I just moved to the bay area and was just wondering how cops generally are out here with speeding.

How much are tickets generally? And do they typically use radar? Are speed cameras frequent?

Thanks!
Mike

Mike, fines are based on speed, CHP uses laser > 50% of the time. LOE usage varies by city/county. I have V1 and turned X & K off, only running KA & Laser. Try not to go more than 10 mph over posted speed limit as I think that's the threshold on the freeways. probably less on local roads.

As for Speed Cameras, I haven't seen any, only red light cameras in various city/counties.

With the CHP and local cops, I have only been lit up with Ka band (have the Passport 9000 detector) and never laser (you will see them use these camera like devices, but so far have only set off my Ka when those were used). Be very careful on Hwy 280 especially from Daly City all the way to San Jose, with extreme caution between San Bruno and Palo Alto...is extremely heavily patrolled with numerous speed traps. A lot of the freeway has been redone and is as close as you're going to get on the autobahn as possible in CA as is very smooth. 5-10 mph over is usually okay if keeping up with traffic, 10 may be pushing it esp if you're in the #1 lane. Same applies to other freeways (101, East Bay freeways etc)...it's whether you're sticking out or not vs traffic.

Cops are bored. I laugh every time I see a Prius pulled over for speeding.

I always see prius' speeding on the freeway. Literally 80+. Pretty sure they are getting worse gas mileage than me at that point.

HWY 280 has a few spots where they hang out, and the spots are VERY well hidden. I've see a cop with a radar gun standing behind an SOS pole, for Bay Area peeps, this is southbound 280 where the 92 merges.
They also tend to hide under bridges where the shade hides them on a sunny day, but generally they are out the last week of the month and the first two to three days of the beginning of the month.

And good luck speeding in the bay, traffic makes it next to impossible to do such a thing. At least when I'm on the road.

If you keep the speed under 10 mph over the speed limit, you are generally ok. Really depends on the area too. Like everyone says, 280 from SF to Mountain View is highly patrolled as it is easy to drive fast there with smooth wide open roads and little traffic. And if you are out there at 4am, there are rarely ever any patrols there...
