Question Extinguisher options

This feels like a moronic question, but I'll ask it anyway since it's a safety thing and I don't fuck around with safety.

Is there much value to having a small extinguisher mounted in the car for track days? Every event I attend has manned flag stations, obviously, and those guys have big extinguishers. One part of me says "they have extinguishers, just worry about getting your own ass out of the car" but the other says "what if you're not near the worker and/or it takes them 15-20 seconds to get to you".

For those with an in-car extinguisher, are you just running a simple 2.5-pound Amerex 417 ABC? Do you use the footwell mount or roll-cage mount?

I've been wondering this same thing and not sure what route to take. Curious to see some other inputs

I think there is value to having one when you need it! I recently came to the realization that it was silly that I did a ton of upgrades to my car but ignored safety. I proceeded to get an extinguisher and Hans device. I went with safe craft because the quality is incredible. The machined nozzle and handle is impressive. Custom mount hand made out of a sheet of AL. I would research the different fluid options. Some are easier to clean than others. I can't remember which version I have.

VAC makes an easy-to-use mount for a 2.5 pound extinguisher. Sits right in between your legs on the floor. Can be reached and released easily. (Occasionally, it can get kicked while getting in the car and it releases.)

Anyway, I've never had to use it. But it is nice to know that something is within reach. The whole setup of mount and extinguisher was like $140.

Some tracks, if you want to show up on a semi-exclusive day, require a "race prepped" car----roll bar, harness and fire extinguisher.

Thanks. Fortunately, Brey-Krause makes a footwell mount for my car -- it attaches directly in front of either seat -- but also a harness/roll bar mount. I'm thinking I'll go for the footwell mount since it's a bit less conspicuous.

BK stuff is solid. I like their quick release mounts a lot.

I prefer the Brey-Krause mount. The design and build are very well done and it is as solid as a rock.

Hm, wonder if anyone makes a trunk mount for an extinguisher. I think it's smart to have one on the street too just in case.

Should be pretty easy. Just remove the carpeting and find a place to mount, cut the carpet to fit the bracket, and you're done.

If it is for peace of mind, making your own bracket or installing prefabbed ones should be easy peasy. If it is one of those "I know I will need it once I move up further up in the track car ladder" you might want to see if there are any rules regarding installation, extinguishing agent, etc.

I also use the Brey-Krause mount and Safecraft extinguisher as well.

Do either of you guys notice that your passengers keep kicking it? Do they complain about it cutting into their footwell space?

If you are worried about that, put it in front of your seat.

If you look closely at my pics (esp. the 2nd one) - you may see part of a wedge of medium density foam wedged in to require a bit more force to release. That prevents it from being kicked free by a student.

I've never heard an issue about foot room. I adjusted it after initial installation to move it back a bit - more for my ability to reach it quickly/easily.

I use roll cage mount in my e46. Fits on the down tube behind seat as doors are long space there can grab on way out.

LOL or you could just dismount it when not at the track.

Not a bad idea to have one in the car at all times but you could put it somewhere else during street driving.

After some research and talking to a few shops, it sounds like Halon is the chemical you want.

The cheap kitchen/home ABC ones will work, but they make an ungodly mess and could really add to the damage. Halon is extremely effective and does not leave behind any residue, though it's obviously a very dangerous chemical. Production of new Halon was outlawed long ago but there's still lots of it in circulation.

There are some new alternatives that replace Halon, such as Halotron, but their UL effectiveness rating is only HALF that of Halon. They cost more than the ABC, but are still way cheaper than Halon.

Just some FYI for anyone who searches this in the future. :-)

I mounted mine behind the seats on the rollbar... No way would I reach it in a reasonable amount of time from outside the car. So I went and grabbed some aluminum from Home Depot and did this instead next to the parking brake. This is on a gutted E46. Uses an allstar quick release. Pull the red cable and grab the bottle up and out.

I guess I would be curious how easily and quickly you can reach across to the passenger footwell to release the extinguisher. I probably should've tested this before ordering the mount....
