Tire shop sanded my wheels (on purpose)

I took my brand new (just refinished at HRE) P40s to the most high end (and expensive) tire shop I could possibly find in SoCal (will remain nameless for now) and this is the result, deep sanding scratches in all four wheels.

When I asked them why it looks like they took sandpaper to my brand new several thousand dollar wheels they explained it was because they purposely sanded the wheels to take off the powdercoat so the weights would stick better (they never asked me before they did this). It looks terrible because they sanded an area much larger than the size of the weights themselves. I dont even want to think what it will look like when I get new tires and the weights are moved leaving huge silver strips on my black wheels.

I'm fuming right now. Anyone have any insight? I have never heard of anything like this before and I intend to ask them to send the wheels to HRE for repair.

They better pay for the repairs. Yea sure sanding will help the weights adhere, but that should be a last measure and I am sure they could have just used a stronger adhesive IF those weights should ever fall off.

If someone did that to my wheels, I would be super pissed and force them to pay for repairs. That's super noticeable as well.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I have some 3M tape that I wouldn't use to secure the weights only because I'd be afraid of not being able to get them off! What’s even worse is after sanding it doesn't look like they even cleaned the area where they affixed the weights as there was tons of powdercoat dust on them.

3M tape isnt too bad to get off of paint, and I've found rubbing compound works very well on wheels.

TBH, it looks like they used something close to 100 grit paper or something, like they just didn't give a crap. I'm wondering how my weights will look when they are removed and rebalanced. I know my local shop has done a great job with my OEM wheels, so the true test is my current set-up lol

When swapping tires, I personally remove the old weights with a plastic/interior trim tool just to avoid scratches...

Make them pay refinishing!

I have some P40SC's on order right now and I cant even begin to imagine how ape sh!t I would gobif they did that to me. Where on your receipt does it say shop may have to sand wheels? Probably no where. Id doubt they have a leg to stand on, but unfortunately for u it is what it is now. Maybe after seeing my finish you'll want to do yours like mine!

WTF? I never heard of such a thing. All my wheels have been painted, took them to race tracks with weights.

Every time you change tires the weight is going to be off meaning you will need to put the weights elsewhere.

agree that you should call out these clowns - I think people on car forums are generally too quick to smear vendors, but this is just terrible. not just that they thought this was somehow ok, but that they come up with BS excuses to try to get out of taking responsibility. you can ask a thousand aftermarket wheel owners here and I bet none of them have had their wheels sanded like that to take a wheel weight

My local shop had the same problem with the weights not sticking to the powdercoat because I put a few layers of sealant on the wheels before they mounted the tires but they wouldn't have done something that dumb. They told me it might take awhile for the tape to really stick so once I got the wheels home (they didn't install the wheels on to the car for me) I should try to apply some pressure to the weights with some C clamps or something similar for at least a few hours. I ended up using a rubber padded large vise grip type tool and never had any problems with the weights falling off.

The shop that did this sells a lot of HRE wheels too. You would think they would know better.
