is this a good digital camera?

I'm looking just to get a basic digital camera with good features and I need the photo experts input on this one....

Casio - EXILIM 10.1MP Digital Camera

(best buy link) http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1202648530103

most pictures will be just photoshoots and some rolling shots (hopefully it can take rolling shots)

Thanks!!

For photography i would probably go with a SLR... These types are good for regular use (ie. family photos. meets, etc.)

You'll have a hard time using this for rolling shots. For real creative control, you're generally looking at a DSLR. You can get any shot with any camera, but the point and shoot will generally require infinitely more patience.

If you want to go point and shoot, I'd stick to the upper end of the Canon A-series line.

Check out the Sony DSC-T300. Nice and compact, great picture quality.

Did you check on-line at places like www.bhphotovideo.com? I picked up an A80 back in 2001 and didn't pay anywhere near $500 even after getting a bunch of accessories.

If a dSLR is too much for you (in terms of camera) or more than you need what about some of the mid-range cameras that offer a good deal of manual control but w/ a fixed lens and still PnS capability? The S3 IS I had fit under that category and was still << $500 when I got it a few years back. I just picked up a XTi recently but still kept the S3 because of the versatility.

yeah, good ones are not cheap. That's any camera.

As far as the XTi, or any DSLR, I wrote up a thread about comparing and evaluating DSLR's. Let me know if it's helpful.

Casio are okay cameras. They're not better than Canon or Panasonic for point and shoots. The only standout Casio camera is this one

You can take 30 FPS photos and 300 FPS video.

I would stick to Canon or Nikon. Good range of price points. You might be better off with one of their point and shoot cameras.

Nice choice... not really basic but a good choice nonetheless. I was considering the Nikon D80 for myself because the point and shoots just don't cut it for me. I'm sure you'll be happy with this choice as long as you're willing to deal with the learning curve. Look forward to your pics

I totally love this camera!
I've had the Casio - EXILIMs since they were like 5MP
Now i have a 7.5MP i think. . . It works great.
Sooo many different features.
6 of my friends have liked it so much after using mine they went and bought their own

D40 Example

Here is a shot I took at the Detroit auto show earlier this year. I'm not a professional, so the D40 works well for me. I couldn't justify a more expensive camera for my interests, but I must say it works well for me.

This is with the kit lens and no flash. I did crop and rescale the photos for posting to fit e90post's size limits.
