I don't see that having a m/t is an issue even in the heaviest of traffic. Of course there is more clutch/shifter work, but nothing that makes driving a pain. I can see people accustomed to a/t's complaining, but if you have had m/t car in the past, you know it's just fine. If you are coming from an auto, stick to the auto. I have driven m/t cars my entire life, and even on the 401 (Toronto) in grid lock when you are in stop and go traffic on the highway, I never found myself hating a car for having a m/t. The pros outweigh the cons for sure!
I don't care how fast a DCT trans can shift...it doesn't replace a true clutch/shifter. No matter how much slower I shift compared to the "computer", I would rather not get the car if I was getting an "automatic" trans. The trend is going toward taking the fun out of driving with these fancy new transmissions in the higher end makes. |

I happened to get stuck in France (for 4 hours!!!) in one of the worst traffic jams I've ever been in. While I wouldn't call it enjoyable, the clutch is light enough that it didn't cause any severe problems.
If I had to do something like that, and for that kind of duration, every day I honestly might have second thoughts. But once in awhile, it wasn't really a problem. |

The clutch in my car is so light and easy to use i dont see a problem at all. Unless you just despise shifting you should be fine.

If I had to do it over again (which I might), I'd get the DCT . It's not that I don't like 6mt, it's just the DCT is .2 seconds faster hahah...

I just came from a 335i 6AT to M3 6MT. Ive been in LA traffic a few times now, and it really isnt that bad (from the driving perspective). In fact, it keeps me more active and awake in traffic, instead of the monotonous driving AT in traffic.

Depends on what part of LA. I live in south Orange County and reverse commute, and I have 2 manuals... My M3 and a Honda. But if I was driving the 10 or 405 or 101 with traffic, I don't think I could do a manual every day.

I lived in Pasadena and drove manuals. But I worked in Glendora, so again, kindof a reverse commute. I just got the M3 a month ago, and because I commute 100 miles a day, I had to get a commuter. Picked up a $10K Honda that will probably go forever, so now the M3 is the garage/fun car. I'm not made of $, so it feels a tiny bit impractical, but in the long run, it's actually a good financial decision (given the M3 purchase) to NOT put a ton of hard miles on a $60K car. If you can swing it, I'd go manual M3 and get a cheap commuter for the daily grind.
Oh, and you'll want to pick up a Ferrari when you're out looking for women...

Commuter traffic is the same in Vancouver sometimes -- crawling along a lot of the time but nothing like LA traffic which is BRUTAL most of the time
DCT takes the chore out of that -- if your left foot going numb is a concern to you -- then i highly suggest DCT

I'm a 6MT driver and love the clutch but the DTC is something special man. It's a real pleasure driving a DTC M. Sometimes I regret not going DCT. I think an SSK will make me feel better about my 6MT.

Get the 6spd m. Cause if you do have any traffic, when it breaks, your car will sound sweeter going thru the gears as you pull off, Not to mention the 2nd and 3rd gear chirp sound-off while power shifting thru the gear's.

The last two weeks my commute has been about 45 minutes in fairly heavy traffic (about 15-20 MPH with a few complete stops). Honestly its more frustrating than anything else. Frustration comes from driving a awesome car and inching along in 2nd or 3rd gear under 3000 rpms when you wish you could rip it to redline. The actually clutch in/out isn't bad the clutch is pretty light compared to some others.
I am currently thinking about getting a cheap commuter car as people have mentioned above. Sometimes it feels pointless driving the M3 as a daily since your sitting in traffic 70% of the time and getting 17 MPG, but when the highway/road opens up oh man does it feel sweet. EDIT: cheap commuter car as an additional car not getting rid of the M! |

Call me cheap but honestly, I don't think I can justify the extra $2900.00 for the DCT.
Don't get me wrong, it is an amazing transmission and is capable of incredible shift times... but on a 65k car, I don't feel right paying that much more money on something not completely necessary for my needs. In the end, DCT is still fucking incredible

I have it and love it. But I live in a small/mid sized city without traffic issues. If I lived in an urban/metro area, I'd probably go M-DCT.
