Google Maps Functionality
So I regularly use the functionality to send directions to my car via Google Maps. I planned to do it just now for a restaurant I'm going to tonight. The 'send' link is no longer showing as an option on the map Anyone else run into this problem?

It's a google fault; their technicians are currently working to fix it and there is no intention to remove the application. Hopefully it will be back soon!
Just been discussing it on the UK forum http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=348059 |

It looks like it was removed by accident. There is another story about "send to Garmin" being removed by accident from google maps as well. This happend recently.

Guess I'm not the only one that uses it. Thanks for the info. , hopefully Google will have it back on soon. For minute I thought I lost my mind when it wasn't there.

I had this working on my car and used it on a day to day bases. Id ask my assistant to send me directions. But now that I stopped paying for the BMW Assist it doesn't work anymore.
Keep in mind in Canada BMW assist is free for the first year but that's it..

I feel dumb asking, but does this work on 2008 e92 M3's w/Nav? Or, is it only available for 2009 or 2010's (when they changed over from DVD based Nav to Hard Drive systems)?

Make that two of us. How does (did) one send Google Map instructions to the car via BMW Assist?

"If you are driving a 2008 X6 produced 4/08 or later or any 2009 and later BMW Assist-equipped BMW (except X3) and have a valid BMW Assist subscription, you will be able to send and receive the destination and phone number in your vehicle through MyInfo." So I don't know how a 2008 M3 would work with this.

I keep hearing conflicting things too. BMW USA does say that it will only work on 2008 X6's...but then I hear it works on 2008 M3's made for Canada. Then I read another thread on here last night that eluded to a "workaround" to get the "Google Maps Send To Car" feature to work on US 2008's. But not sure what the actual workaround is. Can anyone shed more light on this for us 2008 US M3 owners?

The 04/08 (actually, it applies to some 03/08 as well) production date is from the introduction of the GSM TCU, which allows Google maps to send, decode and display the info in the iDrive screen.
IMO, the reason that the Canadian MY2008 3-Series and the X6 in the USA can receive Google maps and the rest of the MY2008 USA BMW don't seems to me to be the switchover from the Verizon (CDMA) to the AT&T (GSM) Assist contract in the USA, not because of any technical reason. Whoever is the Canadian provider made it possible over there for Google maps to work from the GSM TCU get go in all models. I guess that the US X6 got Google maps because BMW most probably made a deal with Verizon for just 5-6 months to provide that service until AT&T took over the whole line up by 09/08, as another "exciting" feature of a just introduced model by then. Both the Canadian and the US GSM TCU have same exact P/N and the feature works in the old iDrive so this is not a new iDrive-only feature, the service provider has to be the difference. It looks to me like a simple cost measure for the US BMW. For those Canadian M3 with production dates of 03/08 (check your TCU in the trunk for "GSM" printed in the label) just try sending a Google map message or simply call your Assist and ask if the service is actually valid for your car. If so then make sure that your email on file at the Assist is the exactly the same email that you are using to send the Maps. |
