2010 Model Short Lived...Why

I bought my car new in Sept. '09 and delivered on Oct. 31 2009. Only 2-3 months later, they had ceased production on the 2010 and started the 2011 models. Was wondering if anyone had any insight of what had happened and the decisions made to jump to 2011 model so early in production. Was it solely because of the new competition pack? Was the comp pack not ready in time for the 2010 models?

Essentially that's it, yeah.

The E92/E93 3 series and M3 LCI happened at that time, and they bumped the model year (as they typically do) to reflect the significance of the change. Rather than let the coupe/convertible model year get out of sync with the sedan/touring, they just changed everything over. So all E9x M3 and 3 series changed to a new model year at that time, even though E90/E91 M3 and 3 series (like you have, OP) didn't really receive any significant revisions (I think there were some minor iDrive enhancements or something though).

LCI amounted to different red plastic taillights on the m3 and a couple other changes that were of no consequence to me

no biggie

LCI's are an easy way to get people back in stores looking for the latest. A lot of what ends up being changed in an LCI is not advertised or shown, though. In engineering release cycle terms, the LCI is a new drawing version and allows BMW to make more significant changes than would otherwise be available to them by the certification and authorization boards.

Hmm, maybe that's why I never hear problems with 2010 M3's on the forum. Most of the problems (idle valve, limp mode etc.) I hear about are 2011. I hope 2010 was a good year for the M!

This is the 2010 v. 2010.5 v 2011 discussion, ja? They probably cut short the production run to get some changes thrown in earlier on the production line. If those changes were included as part of the 2011 drawing change, that's why it ended early.

It really was simply that the LCI was already scheduled to happen at that time, and they wanted to bump the model year with the LCI.

Makes sense to me. The sooner the increased LCI sales kick in, the happier BMW would be.

So basically, either the LCI or the comp pack was not ready in time for the 2010 from what everyone is saying. Was the Start/Stop function added also at the beginning of 2011 or was it later on in like the 2011.5's? I noticed the sun visors are bit cheaper and they stopped giving out the big leather ///M book folder for the owner's manual (at least from what I saw at the dealership).

It stands for "Life Cycle Impulse" and is BMW's way of making small, usually non-sheet metal changes to a car model in the middle of its sales life. Generally it's just cosmetic like the LED tail-lights and such.

More like a good 3 months, lol. I've only had one major problem and it was with the ECU. Gave out and car wouldn't turn over. Dealer had to put a new one and reprogram it. On the upside, it looks like the updated my iDrive a bit as well. Have all new icons and an option for google search appears now. The nav still gets a bit crazy when I'm in NJ still though which i hate.

I recently got my iDrive updated at the dealer too, there are a few different icons and different font but what's cool is that now I can see arabic song names
