You would be lucky to get $34k for it with new engine and $15k without. Just my opinion. So either option works. I'd vote to get the new engine and keep the car

I think your expectation of value for either option is too high. You should stop looking the gift horse in the mouth and take that goodwill offer.

The rebuild S65 = Probably from a previous S65 bearing failure somewhere in the world .

17K for parts and labor seems like a pretty good deal. For used motor- not so much. I would insist on inspecting the crate motor.

The car is located in SF Bay Area so the value of an E90 with low miles is a lot higher than in other areas in the country. I have done my research and I could sell the car no problem for $35K if the engine and body had 42,000 miles. The majority of M3 for sale are E92s with high mileage which have not held their values like the E90s. The people that have E90 M3s (not E92) know what they have and aren't going to get rid of the car for low offers. Supply and Demand. The market is setting the value especially in CA. The fact that it has a new engine with 2 year warranty on the engine is worth an additional $5K. If not, then yes I would just keep the car. Just my opinion. |

Yes, the Engine is from BMW NA and comes with 2 year warranty. New just means that all parts are new and comes with Warranty from BMW. That's how they sell their engines for E90/E92s.

I agree with the above posters. Stop looking a gift horse in the mouth and take the engine and warranty. You should consider yourself extremely lucky to have received that kind of offer from BMW. It's an 08 and the mileage isn't THAT low... I've seen requests denied for failures in newer cars with 1/4 the mileage of yours.
My company deals in these M's and I buy and sell them frequently at salvage auctions. Based on my experience you would never see anywhere close to 20k for the car without an engine regardless of how unique the car might be. Your only hope would be to find some schlub who is in love with the car and purchases it out of passion. If you need to come in cheaper for a new engine, buy one with low miles and have a shop install it. I frequently sell engines with fewer miles than your car, or can even supply refurbished or rebuilt engines as well. Personally I would jump on their offer for a discounted engine. |

Indeed- it's an M3 and not a Civic. Engine failures are handled differently in these kind of performance cars. |

Basically the same offer they gave me on a 17k mile 2011.75 1 year out of warranty... luckily my Mercury Warranty covered it 100%. (BMW does not keep that offer for warranty companies however)
Basically BMW is offering it at what they consider 0 markup. Also note: if I accept that offer I would have not be allowed to see the final diagnosis. Meaning i could never come back on them in a Rod Bearing / Main bearing suit. BMW NA is a nightmare to work with. Eventually just stopped responding and sent me a canned legal "we don't owe you anything" message. |

Personal I would keep the car and take the rebuild S65 from BMW otherwise you would lose too much value on your car. Please keep us posted..

You'll get no more than blue book value for your car in running condition regardless of condition of the car and whether the engine is new, used, or original.
You won't get more than 10-13k for the car as it sits with a blown engine. Good luck. |

17k for a new s65 is a great deal.. I didn't even know they still have new ones out there, it's kind of a Win & lose situation. But a new s65 and only 42k on chassi? Sounds pretty good to me man.. you could sell it too but I don't think you'll get anywhere near 39k.
